Fabian Schär has signed a new one-year contract extension at St James’ Park, keeping him at the club until the end of the 2026/27 season.
The Swiss defender, who was previously out of contract, agreed reduced terms after positive discussions with the club. Despite speculation over his future due to injury setbacks and squad restructuring plans, Newcastle have opted to retain his experience.
Schär has been with the club since 2018 and remains a trusted figure in Eddie Howe’s squad.
Eddie Howe welcomed the extension, stressing the defender’s importance both on and off the pitch.
He praised Schär’s leadership, professionalism, and passing ability from defence, describing him as a key influence in the dressing room and an important part of the squad’s balance.
Howe also noted that while Schär missed parts of last season due to injury, his recovery and attitude remain strong heading into pre-season.
Sporting director Ross Wilson described the negotiations as “complex but positive,” confirming that all parties were keen to reach an agreement quickly after the season ended.
He added that Schär still has a valuable role to play as the club enters a transition period focused on strengthening the squad.
Newcastle are expected to sign at least one new goalkeeper this summer, alongside further defensive reinforcements as part of their wider rebuild strategy.
While several experienced players are leaving, Schär’s extension provides continuity as the club balances experience with long-term squad development.
