The rumours began circulating in Italian media on Tuesday, with claims suggesting Vardy was interested in returning to Leicester for one final season.
Reports also stated the former Foxes captain could take on a player-coach role as the club prepares for life in League One after a disastrous campaign that ended with back-to-back relegations in just three years.
The speculation quickly spread across social media, with many Leicester supporters dreaming of an emotional comeback from the club’s greatest modern-era player. Vardy remains one of the most iconic figures in Leicester City history after leading the Foxes to their unbelievable Premier League title triumph in 2016.
During his 13-year spell at the club, he made 500 appearances, scored 200 goals and helped Leicester win the Premier League, FA Cup and Community Shield.
However, Rebekah Vardy was quick to shut down the rumours. Responding to a Leicester City supporter online, she simply wrote: “Fake news, I’m afraid.”
Vardy left Leicester City last summer after deciding to continue his career abroad, joining Italian side Cremonese in Serie A. The veteran striker signed a one-year contract with the option of an additional season if the club secures survival in the Italian top flight.
Despite turning 39 earlier this year, Vardy has continued to prove his quality in Italy. The former England international scored his sixth league goal of the season in Cremonese’s important 3-0 victory over Pisa on Sunday, a result that moved the club within one point of safety with only two matches remaining.
Cremonese manager Marco Giampaolo recently praised Vardy’s mentality and influence, describing him as a unique striker with elite qualities despite his age.
