While many supporters expected Eddie Howe to pursue an experienced replacement, Newcastle’s recruitment team appear determined to invest in elite young talent capable of becoming world-class stars in the years ahead.
The Magpies have already been linked with the likes of Johan Manzambi, Andrey Santos, Lesley Ugochukwu, Felix Nmecha, Lamine Camara and Angelo Stiller this summer. However, a new name has suddenly emerged and this one could break records.
According to fresh reports, Newcastle have reached an agreement to sign Ajax midfield sensation Stan Steur, with the 18-year-old now closing in on a move to St James’ Park.
The deal is also said to have reached an advanced stage, with the player’s medical reportedly being lined up.
If completed, the transfer would reportedly become Newcastle United’s most expensive teenage signing ever, underlining the club’s growing ambition to compete with Europe’s biggest sides both now and in the future.
Although nothing is officially confirmed yet, Newcastle fans know how quickly deals can change after the Victor Munoz transfer dramatically collapsed at the final hurdle before Liverpool swooped in.
This time, however, there is growing confidence that the Magpies will get the deal over the line.
Steur has made 25 senior appearances for Ajax despite being only 18 years old and is already regarded as one of Dutch football’s brightest midfield prospects.
While he may not immediately walk into Eddie Howe’s starting XI, the club reportedly believe they are signing a player with enormous long-term potential.
His statistics certainly support that belief.
In the Eredivisie, Steur ranks in the 97th percentile for long-ball accuracy and the 93rd percentile for pass completion, highlighting his outstanding technical ability and composure in possession.
Defensively, he is equally impressive, ranking in the 77th percentile for duels won and the 73rd percentile for aerial duels won, proving he is more than capable of competing physically despite his young age.
Those numbers suggest Newcastle are targeting a complete midfielder who can dictate play, win possession and develop into one of the Premier League’s top talents over the coming years.
Even if the Magpies complete the signing, the club are still expected to bring in another experienced midfielder to help fill the void left by Tonali while allowing Steur the time and environment needed to fulfil his enormous potential.
