Newcastle United are navigating a massive rebuilding phase under new head coach Matthias Jaissle.
After a financial reset that saw heavyweights Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimarães and Anthony Gordon leave for major fees, Jaissle is working to urgently inject leadership, depth and experience back into the squad.
Newcastle’s initial summer blueprint heavily targeted highly-rated young prospects, but recent results have forced a shift toward landing players with immediate first-team experience.
João Palhinha of Bayern Munich has emerged as a major target, with Newcastle aggressively entering the race for the veteran Portuguese midfielder and reportedly tabling a three-year permanent contract offer. This comes after Aston Villa’s proposed loan move for Palhinha collapsed.

Carlos Baleba of Brighton is also high on Jaissle’s radar as a potential engine-room reinforcement. However, Newcastle’s interest is currently on hold while the club assesses the 22-year-old’s ankle ligament injury.
Meanwhile, Newcastle United are set to complete their sixth summer signing ahead of the new Premier League season.
23-year-old right-back Amar Dedic is due on Tyneside for his medical after Newcastle agreed a £30million transfer fee and a five-year deal with the Bosnia & Herzegovina international.
The Magpies have been on the hunt for a full-back all summer following the release of Kieran Trippier at the end of the 2025/26 season.
Matt Targett and Emil Krafth were also released, while Harrison Ashby and Alex Murphy left on loan, leaving Newcastle short of senior options in the positions heading into the new campaign.
Tino Livramento is still recovering from a calf injury, while Lewis Miley, who played out of position at right-back last season, has only just returned.
As a result, youngsters Leo Shahar and Mason Miley have started matches at right-back during pre-season. Miodrag Pivas also started at left-back against Valencia in Lewis Hall’s absence.
Now, Dedic, who is primarily used as a right-back but can also play on the left, is set to finalise his move to Newcastle ahead of the Premier League opener against Liverpool on Sunday, August 23.
When asked about potentially starting Mason Miley against Liverpool following his impressive performance in the friendly defeat against Bayer Leverkusen, Newcastle head coach Matthias Jaissle dropped a potential transfer hint.
“As there is still time to Liverpool, we need to see [who will start],” he responded. “But as you saw also today, [Mason Miley] has the right heart and the right quality to do good, definitely. If he’s getting the chance, why not?
“But again, I think there’s still also a couple of days to go in the transfer market. His brother can also play this position. So let’s see what happens until Liverpool.”
However, when asked specifically about Dedic and the reportedly imminent transfer, Jaissle remained tight-lipped.
“I think it’s not the right time to talk about positions and names,” he said. “So I don’t step into rumours. Not at this stage.”
Jaissle is understood to have privately given the move his seal of approval, having previously worked with Dedic at Red Bull Salzburg.
