High-profile stars Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali have already left Newcastle United this summer.

Newcastle United have reportedly told Bruno Guimarães that they do not wish to sell him this summer.

It is also claimed that Arsenal’s interest has been driven primarily by Mikel Arteta, who values the player highly. The Magpies’ hierarchy have already allowed Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali to leave St James’ Park.

Around £180 million has been recouped from the pair’s departures, allowing Newcastle to shift their focus to incoming transfers. However, the rumour mill continues to swirl, with several top stars — including Guimarães — still attracting interest.

Fabrizio Romano provides Bruno Guimarães update

Italian sports journalist Fabrizio Romano noted that selling Gordon and Tonali has given Newcastle greater flexibility in the transfer market. However, he refused to rule out the possibility of Arsenal returning with another bid for Guimarães.

“Guys, obviously, Newcastle sold Sandro Tonali and Newcastle sold Anthony Gordon, so now Newcastle have no intention of letting Bruno Guimarães go,” he said on his YouTube channel. “At the same time, Arsenal had a £55 million bid rejected. Mikel Arteta is a big fan of the player, so what I can tell you in addition to all of this is that he really, really likes the player.

“Mikel Arteta has been driving this interest in Bruno Guimarães internally. It’s not the first time Arsenal have gone for him. Even in the past, they considered the possibility of signing Bruno Guimarães.

“He has always been a player appreciated by Arteta, but now, with Newcastle, it’s not going to be an easy deal at all because Newcastle have already made money from Gordon and Tonali, and they have already told Bruno Guimarães and those close to him that they want to keep the player.

“So, it’s not going to be easy at all for Arsenal to get it done. They could try again, and I wouldn’t rule that out because Arsenal really consider Bruno their top midfield target. But, at the moment, the message from Newcastle is clear: the door is closed. So, let’s see what happens. That is the Bruno Guimarães situation as of today.”

Alan Shearer makes Bruno Guimarães prediction

Newcastle legend Alan Shearer is hopeful that Guimarães will remain on Tyneside. Speaking earlier this week, he said:

“I think it would be a really poor look for Newcastle to sell their best player. You can see what he’s doing for Brazil at this World Cup. I think he’s been one of their best players.

“He is a brilliant talent, and with Anthony Gordon already gone, I think it would be a really poor look if Newcastle were to sell Bruno as well. It would not go down well with the fans. I don’t see it happening. I’d be surprised if it did happen. I hope it’s just paper talk and there’s no truth in it because it would be a huge blow for Newcastle.

“There would be a lot of angry fans if he were to leave. I think it’s even more so now because of social media — everyone has an opinion and everyone can say what they want. Ninety-nine per cent of it is going to be rubbish, and I hope that’s the case with the stories about Bruno.”
