Newcastle United have suffered another injury setback at a difficult stage of the season, with one of their summer arrivals now facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
The injury comes as head coach Matthias Jaissle continues to deal with fitness problems within his squad, making the situation particularly frustrating for the Magpies as they look to recover from their recent disappointing results.
The player in question suffered the setback two weeks ago while away on international duty with France Under-21s. According to Jaissle, the youngster is expected to be sidelined for “a couple of months” as he begins his recovery.
The goalkeeper joined Newcastle from Ligue 2 side Stade de Reims for £18 million during the summer transfer window. He arrived at St James’ Park as the club’s second-choice goalkeeper, with the expectation that he would receive opportunities in cup competitions.
However, his progress has now been interrupted by another injury.
The Frenchman had only recently recovered from a knee problem before joining up with the France Under-21s. Unfortunately, he suffered another setback during training while on international duty.
Ewen Jaouen breaks silence on injury setback
The Newcastle youngster has now started his recovery and has used social media to provide supporters with an update on his condition.
“Every setback has a purpose,” Jaouen wrote. “I got injured while on international duty, but I know this is just another step in my journey.
“A new challenge starts today and I’m already locked in on what’s next. Fully focused on my comeback. See you soon @nufc ”
His message will come as a boost to Newcastle supporters, who will now hope the 20-year-old can make a full recovery and return to action as soon as possible.
Jaouen made his Newcastle debut in the Carabao Cup second-round victory over West Bromwich Albion but has featured in only one matchday squad since arriving on Tyneside.
With the youngster unavailable, Nick Pope has been promoted to the bench as backup to first-choice goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek.
Pope had been expected to leave Newcastle during the summer, with Ipswich Town reportedly showing interest. However, the proposed move eventually collapsed following the departure of their head coach, Kieran McKenna.
For Jaissle, the latest injury adds another complication as he attempts to find consistency with his Newcastle squad.
The Magpies will now have to manage the situation carefully, while Jaouen focuses on his rehabilitation and works towards making his return.
For now, Newcastle supporters will be hoping that the young goalkeeper can put the latest setback behind him and come back stronger when he is finally ready to return.
