Interesting to read through these BBC Sport ‘neutrals’ comments following Newcastle United’s 4–1 defeat to Coventry City.
It was a convincing victory for the home side at the CBS Arena.
Newcastle made a disastrous start to the match when Lukáš Horníček conceded a penalty inside four minutes. Despite dominating possession, corners, shots and touches in the opposition penalty area, repeated failures at both ends of the pitch contributed to the heavy defeat.
It is always interesting to hear the perspectives of neutral supporters, as well as fans of Coventry City, Newcastle United and Sunderland.
BBC Sport Readers’ Comments
“Newcastle would have gone fourth with a win. This shows how poor the Premier League is.”
“I’m a big Newcastle Toon fan and have to say, Coventry deserved it hands down!”
“Well done Coventry from a Leeds United fan. All we need now is to get rid of the cheats! Or are these so-called elites untouchable?”
“So that’s Newcastle, Tottenham and Man City for relegation then!”
“I’ll be happy with Tottenham and Man City, but I’m sure there are a few other clubs with dodgy PSR dealings as well as Man City. Hope the telescope lands on a few other cheats.”
“Every team will want to play Newcastle on a Monday night. Coventry have followed Leeds in dishing out a Monday night 4–1 drubbing. The three promoted sides are showing real resilience. Good performance by Coventry tonight and some calamitous, schoolboy defending from Newcastle.”
“Coventry, you were brilliant.”
“As a Hull City fan, congratulations to our promoted colleagues. All three of us have started well.”
“It’s the Sunderland blueprint.”
“Well done, Sky Blues, from a West Ham fan.”
“Err, reality check: Coventry have not started well.”
“Leicester fan here. 4–1 against Newcastle… what a result! It pains me to say it, but Coventry really are back, and fair play to them. After 15 years of utter turmoil with ownership and homelessness, to see you come through the other side like this is unbelievable. Your fans genuinely deserve every bit of it. Proper club. Respect.”
“Can’t understand why BDB wasn’t brought on to replace Botman. He’s become a complete liability. His goal was excellent, but it was the only good touch he had throughout.”
“Get Burn and Schär in and have three in midfield, not two. Simples.”
“Toon Tonked should be the headline.”
“Who is this John Anderson on Radio Newcastle? With ten minutes to go, he said, ‘A goal is coming for Newcastle, Coventry are dead on their feet.’ How embarrassing! These pundits make you laugh.”
“Deluded Magpie.”
“I can’t wait to watch the Mackems go down this season. Get the popcorn.”
“You will be joining us, Newcastle. You’re the worst team in the Prem. How you have eight points is a mystery.”
“He played a blinder for the Geordies in an 8–1 defeat at West Ham.”
“Congratulations, Frank and the Sky Blues. Great to see you shrug off your disappointing start to the season and put in a convincing performance. Neutral here, but I hate to see the newly promoted teams losing confidence.”
“At least this increases the chances of Spurs’ relegation, which we should all be thankful for.”
“Sunderland fan here: Proper football club, 4 Saudis 1. Lovely to see. Great to have you back, Coventry.”
“Embarrassing. Newcastle players need to sort themselves out. The defence is shambolic. The midfield is so passive. The team have lost their aggressive pressing play. Players are too slow to read the game and react. Passing and attacking play are so predictable. Not one player is taking the ball on the turn to create space and cause defenders trouble. Worst I’ve seen in a while. It can’t continue.”
“You’re spot on, but as long as Linton gets picked, it will.”
“Your comments are spot on. All that possession and no end result. None of the new intake played well, and Barnes, Wissa, Willock and Hall played as though it was a practice match. Coventry wanted it more than Newcastle when a challenge was called for and deserved the points.”
“Hall got hailed for his international performances, then believed the hype. Complacency gets involved. Oh, it’s only Coventry.”
“Great to see Frank Lampard doing a brilliant job following the hurtful and disrespectful stick he’s received on here from keyboard warriors. Good on him. He’s an intelligent and articulate young manager who I think will do well.”
“Rudoni is looking at home in the Prem, and Thomas is getting better and better. The team were under the cosh for periods but kept battling and showed that we have quality as well as heart.”
“As a Newcastle supporter, please can PIF sell the club? We all know you don’t want us and, to be frank, we don’t want you. The decisions over the last two years have been amateurish and are now coming back to bite you. The manager is out of his depth with kids and two central defenders who can’t defend. Jaissle will be out by Christmas.”
“Sunderland fan here: Should consider getting Moyes in to prevent us getting relegated at this point.”
“Ahh, the Mackems are out tonight, I see. I’d keep your head down, kid. You’re 17th.”
“Surprised Newcastle managed a goal. They are toothless. They dominated possession but were ponderous, lacked penetration, had nobody who could go past a defender, and don’t have a clinical finisher. Too many contributed very little. It’s going to be a difficult watch this season. Coventry showed how to attack quickly and put the ball in the net every time. Well done, Coventry.”
“Thanks, but we were a bit fortunate at times too!”
“Spurs fan here: We will be flying higher than Coventry after beating them next Monday night, doing what Newcastle failed miserably to do.”
