Newcastle United are heading into Saturday’s Premier League clash with Tottenham Hotspur in a positive mood after securing a dramatic 3-2 victory over West Brom in the Carabao Cup.

The win was an important boost for Matthias Jaissle and his squad, particularly with the German manager still searching for his first Premier League victory since taking charge of the Magpies.

Newcastle were made to work hard for their cup victory, but the result appears to have lifted the atmosphere around the squad ahead of another difficult test.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the victory, Jaissle revealed that he was pleased with the mood inside the dressing room and explained one small decision he made following the demanding game.

«“I gave the lads an hour longer sleep, we’re in a really good mood.”»

The decision may sound simple, but it says plenty about Jaissle’s approach to managing his players.

Rather than immediately turning his attention to the next fixture, the Newcastle boss recognised the effort his players had put into the 3-2 victory and gave them additional time to recover.

That extra hour of sleep could prove valuable as Newcastle prepare for a very different challenge against Roberto De Zerbi’s Tottenham.

The Spurs game will demand far more than simply carrying the confidence from a cup victory. Newcastle will have to deal with Tottenham’s possession, movement and ability to create spaces, while also making the most of their opportunities when they win the ball back.

Jaissle knows that his side cannot afford to switch off.

The German manager has already shown that he values the small details, and his comments suggest that keeping his players physically and mentally fresh is an important part of his preparation.

There is also growing belief among Newcastle supporters that the team can take the positive atmosphere from the West Brom victory into Saturday’s encounter.

Three goals, a victory and a happier dressing room have given the Magpies something to build on.

But the real question is whether that confidence can translate onto the pitch against De Zerbi’s Spurs.

And this is where Jaissle’s approach becomes particularly interesting.

With Newcastle looking to secure their first Premier League win under the German, the tactical battle could be decisive.

The Magpies will need to handle Tottenham’s possession while exploiting the spaces that appear during transitions. If Newcastle can execute that plan effectively, they could cause serious problems for Spurs.

For now, however, Jaissle appears determined to keep his players relaxed.

An extra hour of sleep, a positive dressing room and a squad heading into Saturday’s fixture in good spirits could be exactly what Newcastle need.
