Matthias Jaissle has declared that Newcastle United are active in the transfer market after facing the media for the first time as the club’s new head coach.
The German manager also challenged his current squad to prove their worth during the club’s pre-season training camp in La Manga. Jaissle has been tasked with leading Newcastle’s rebuild following Eddie Howe’s departure and several high-profile exits this summer.
With the departures now completed, Newcastle have turned their attention to strengthening the squad. The Magpies have already signed five young players but are expected to make further additions before the new season begins.

As previously reported, Newcastle are targeting a replacement for Bruno Guimarães, while they are also looking to recruit a versatile full-back and a winger. Although Jaissle is aware of the club’s financial backing, he insists he wants to assess his current players before making final decisions.
“We have the capacity”
Speaking about the transfer window, Jaissle said:
> “I’ve had one day here. Of course, I have the squad mapping and I have clear ideas, but I want to know the players now. I want to give them a chance.
> “Definitely, they can show up—it’s always a new challenge for the players too. We can wait. For sure, we have the capacity to do something on the market. Our sporting director is aware of that. For sure, when the season starts we should see new faces.”
Collective approach to recruitment
Jaissle also stressed that Newcastle’s transfer decisions will not be made by one individual, but through a collective process involving the club’s recruitment team.
When asked who has the final say on new signings, he replied:
> “It’s always about unity and having these conversations, being transparent in the way we think.
> “It’s a collective decision what we are going to do. That’s important. We want to show that unity as a club. It is one of the key values from the Newcastle code.”
The comments provide the clearest indication yet that Newcastle remain active in the market as they continue reshaping the squad ahead of the 2026/27 campaign, with further arrivals expected before the transfer window closes.
