Newcastle United’s summer transfer business could be about to gather serious momentum, with the Magpies now intensifying their search for a new midfield general after identifying one of the Bundesliga’s most consistent performers as a leading target.

Behind the scenes, discussions are already underway as Newcastle’s recruitment team continues to assess the market following significant changes to the squad. With the club preparing for a new era under Matthias Jaissle, strengthening the heart of midfield has become one of the biggest priorities before the transfer window closes.

Sources suggest Newcastle have already opened initial talks with the player’s representatives to explore the possibility of a move to St James’ Park. While negotiations remain at an early stage, the interest is genuine and the player has emerged as one of the club’s preferred options to reinforce the engine room.

The midfielder has impressed throughout the past two seasons with his composure on the ball, tactical intelligence and ability to dictate the tempo of matches. Those qualities have reportedly caught the attention of both Jaissle and sporting director Ross Wilson, who believe he could become a long-term cornerstone of Newcastle’s midfield.

However, despite the growing interest, Newcastle are yet to submit an official offer to his current club. The Magpies are carefully evaluating whether to proceed after a key change in the player’s valuation.

Earlier this summer, the player had a release clause worth around £31 million, which would have made negotiations relatively straightforward. But that clause expired on 15 July, meaning his club is now under no obligation to sell at that figure.

As a result, Newcastle would now have to negotiate directly, with the Bundesliga side believed to be demanding somewhere between £35 million and £40 million before considering any sale. That increase has forced Newcastle’s hierarchy to weigh up whether the player still represents value at the higher asking price.

Competition is also beginning to grow. Manchester United are understood to be monitoring the situation closely, meaning Newcastle could face a battle if they decide to formalise their interest in the coming days.

Although no breakthrough has been reached yet, the feeling is that talks could accelerate quickly if Newcastle decide the revised valuation fits within their summer budget. The club are determined to strengthen key positions without overpaying, but they also recognise the importance of giving Jaissle the tools needed to build a competitive side.

The player in question is Angelo Stiller, the 25-year-old Stuttgart midfielder who enjoyed another outstanding campaign in Germany. Operating primarily as a deep-lying midfielder, Stiller contributed two goals and five assists while playing a crucial role in Stuttgart’s impressive qualification for the UEFA Champions League.

Known for his exceptional passing range, calmness under pressure and defensive awareness, Stiller is viewed as a player capable of filling the long-term void left by Sandro Tonali. Whether Newcastle decide to meet Stuttgart’s new valuation remains the big question, but interest is very much alive and this is a transfer story worth watching closely over the coming days.
