Newcastle United’s defence appeared to regress last season, with the Magpies’ ageing backline highlighting the need for fresh reinforcements ahead of the new campaign. Veteran centre-backs Dan Burn and Fabian Schär remain key figures, but the club is expected to strengthen in that area before the transfer window closes.
In recent weeks, Newcastle have been linked with a move for Fikayo Tomori. The England international has been a regular for AC Milan since joining from Chelsea in 2021, and reports suggest he could be available for around €20 million, with just one year remaining on his contract.
However, Tomori is not the only Serie A defender attracting Newcastle’s interest. It appears the Magpies are also keeping close tabs on one of Italy’s brightest young defensive talents.
Newcastle United Interested in Giorgio Scalvini
According to TuttoAtalanta, Premier League clubs have monitored Giorgio Scalvini for several seasons, with Newcastle United currently among the leading contenders for his signature.
The report adds that Scalvini’s recent change of agent is a development worth watching. Atalanta are believed to be looking to balance their finances this summer, and the defender’s switch in representation has only fuelled speculation over a potential transfer.
Reports suggest the Italian club could be willing to consider offers in excess of €45 million for the 22-year-old. Ederson’s proposed move to Manchester United reportedly collapsed at the final stage, meaning Atalanta may now look elsewhere if they decide to sanction a major sale.
The question for Newcastle is whether they would be prepared to invest more than €45 million in one of Europe’s most promising young centre-backs or opt for the more affordable route by pursuing Tomori, whose previous Premier League experience with Chelsea could make him the lower-risk option.
Would Scalvini Be a Good Signing?
Italian football has come under increased scrutiny in recent years. Italy’s failure to qualify for three consecutive FIFA World Cups (2018, 2022 and 2026) has raised serious questions about the state of the national team, particularly given that the 2026 tournament expanded to 48 teams.
That, however, does not mean Italy has stopped producing elite talent. Newcastle know that better than most after benefiting from Sandro Tonali’s quality during his time at St James’ Park before his reported move to Tottenham Hotspur this summer.
Scalvini is widely regarded as one of Italy’s finest young defenders. Despite being only 22 years old, he has already made well over 100 senior appearances for Atalanta and earned eight caps for the Italian national team.
The biggest question is whether he can successfully adapt to the pace, intensity and physical demands of the Premier League. If he does, Newcastle could have one of Europe’s most exciting young centre-backs on their hands and a player capable of leading their defence for many years to come.
