With several new faces already through the door and a clear need for greater depth and quality at the back, Newcastle United have remained active in exploring defensive options across Europe.
Recent reports indicate that preliminary contact has been made with the representatives of one of Serie A’s most highly rated young centre-backs. The player in question is valued at around £42.5 million by his club, and the initial discussions have focused on whether he would be open to a move to the Premier League.

Newcastle United have reportedly opened talks with Giorgio Scalvini’s representatives regarding a potential move for the Atalanta defender. Scalvini, 22, is widely regarded as one of Europe’s brightest young centre-backs after progressing through the ranks at the Bergamo club. Since making his senior debut in October 2021, he has gone on to make 137 appearances for Atalanta and is viewed as one of the club’s most valuable assets heading into the current summer transfer window.
According to Tutto Mercato, both Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur have approached Scalvini’s agents to enquire about the Italy international’s availability. Although Atalanta are determined to keep the defender, they are prepared to enter discussions if their £42.5 million valuation is met, with the Italian club unwilling to consider offers below that figure.
At this stage, Newcastle have not submitted a formal bid. The conversations so far have been exploratory, with the Magpies keen to assess the player’s interest in a switch to English football. Should Scalvini’s representatives respond positively, Newcastle would then be expected to open formal negotiations with Atalanta.
Former Arsenal full-back Sead Kolasinac, now Scalvini’s teammate at Atalanta, has previously spoken highly of the young defender. Speaking to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Kolasinac praised Scalvini’s maturity, technical ability and character.
«”I am struck by the maturity of his 19 years. He reads the game well, he knows what to do with the ball, defend one-on-one, how to use his body in marking: it’s nice to have him alongside in defence. But first of all he is a good guy, even humble: if he doesn’t lose this character, he will have a great career.”»
Newcastle have already completed four signings this summer, committing more than £100 million in the process. Bazoumana Traore, Aladji Bamba, Sean Steur and Ewen Jaouen have all arrived at St James’ Park. Despite that spending, signing another centre-back remains one of the club’s top priorities, with Scalvini emerging as one of their leading defensive targets.
That order of priority may, however, have shifted in recent days following Eddie Howe’s departure after almost five years in charge. Mathias Jaissle is expected to take over after leaving Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli. The managerial change adds another layer of uncertainty to Newcastle’s transfer plans, as the incoming head coach is expected to assess the squad before finalising recruitment priorities.
Defensive solidity has been a recurring focus for Newcastle in recent seasons. While the Magpies have continued to make significant progress, improving depth at centre-back remains an important objective. A player of Scalvini’s profile would represent both an immediate upgrade and a long-term investment, with the Italian already possessing the composure, physicality and tactical intelligence required to thrive in the Premier League despite still having significant room for development.
For now, Newcastle’s interest remains at an exploratory stage, but Scalvini is clearly among the club’s preferred defensive targets. Whether those initial discussions develop into a formal bid will depend on the player’s stance and Atalanta’s willingness to negotiate, with the coming weeks expected to determine whether the Magpies can turn their interest into a concrete move before the transfer window closes.
