Eddie Howe insisted Newcastle United’s pre-season preparations remain firmly on track despite an underwhelming 1-1 draw against Gateshead, while also addressing the growing uncertainty surrounding captain Bruno Guimarães’ future.
The Magpies were held in their first public pre-season friendly of the summer after Luke Supyk gave Gateshead a surprise first-half lead before Newcastle eventually rescued a draw through a late own goal. Although the result carried little importance in the grand scheme of pre-season, the performance left supporters with mixed feelings as Eddie Howe’s side struggled to find their usual attacking rhythm.
Speaking after the match, Howe stressed that results are secondary during this stage of the summer, with the primary objective being to build fitness and gradually prepare his squad for the Premier League campaign.
The Newcastle boss acknowledged there were positives to take from the afternoon but admitted there is still significant work to be done before the season begins. Young players and new signings were handed valuable minutes, while several first-team regulars continued their return to full fitness.
The performance of debutant goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen and midfielder Sean Steur provided encouraging signs for Howe, while Lewis Hall also impressed with another energetic display down the left flank. However, Newcastle lacked creativity in the final third for long periods and were punished when Gateshead capitalised on a defensive lapse to open the scoring.
Despite questions about the display itself, much of Howe’s post-match media conference centred on Bruno Guimarães, whose future has become one of the biggest talking points of Newcastle’s summer.
Reports have linked Arsenal with a move for the Brazilian midfielder, and Howe admitted that while he has held several positive conversations with his captain, he cannot guarantee the midfielder will remain at St James’ Park.
> “I’ve had some really good conversations with him before the World Cup, during the World Cup and after the World Cup. What we speak about has to remain private, but he’s just a great player, a great person. I don’t know what’s going to happen with Bruno’s future.”
Although Howe stopped short of confirming the midfielder’s future, he made it clear how highly Guimarães is valued inside the club.
The Newcastle manager praised both the player’s quality and leadership, describing him as an integral part of the squad and someone everyone at the club wants to keep.
His comments are unlikely to quieten speculation, however, with reports suggesting Arsenal are preparing a bid worth more than £70 million for the Brazil international. Newcastle are understood to be reluctant to sanction another major departure after already losing several high-profile players this summer.
For now, Howe’s immediate focus remains on preparing his squad for the demanding weeks ahead. Newcastle’s pre-season schedule quickly steps up in quality following the Gateshead fixture, giving the head coach further opportunities to improve fitness, integrate new signings and establish his strongest starting XI before the Premier League season gets underway.
While the Gateshead draw will not define Newcastle’s summer, Howe knows improvements are needed. The result may have been insignificant, but the coming weeks will provide a much clearer indication of whether his rebuilt squad is ready to meet the expectations awaiting them when competitive football returns.
