Spurs are splashing the cash this summer and backing Roberto De Zerbi in a big way. The clear need for experience and leadership has been fixed with the signings of three veteran free agents Martin Dubravka, Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi.
A combined £237m has been spent on readymade Premier League players in their primes, with Jan Paul van Hecke, Mateus Fernandes and now Sandro Tonali all arriving.
The fireworks won’t stop there, however, with Spurs aiming to sign one and potentially two new wingers.
Savinho is the top target, while Rafael Leao and Cody Gakpo are also on their radar.
However, Savinho isn’t the only Manchester City player Tottenham have set their sights on, with The Independent recently confirming Spurs have been pushing hard to sign Manchester City goalkeeper James Trafford, with Roberto De Zerbi keen to strengthen his squad ahead of the new season.
But in a dramatic twist, the England international is now reportedly warming to the idea of becoming Newcastle United’s new No. 1 instead.
The latest reports suggest Trafford has effectively accepted that his Manchester City journey is coming to an end as he looks for regular first-team football.
With his future set to be resolved after England’s World Cup commitments, Newcastle have emerged as the favourites to land the highly-rated goalkeeper.
According to the Northern Echo, Trafford is now “receptive” to joining Newcastle United, despite rejecting the Magpies last summer in favour of a move to Manchester City from Burnley.
That decision now appears to have changed completely, with the goalkeeper understood to be open to making the move to Tyneside if the two clubs can reach an agreement over the financial package.
TEAMtalk reports that Manchester City are willing to let Trafford leave for around £40 million, opening the door for Newcastle to finally land a goalkeeper Eddie Howe has admired for some time.
The development will come as a huge blow to Tottenham, who had identified Trafford as a priority target following uncertainty surrounding Guglielmo Vicario’s future. Spurs are already spending heavily this summer but now risk missing out on one of England’s brightest young goalkeepers.
Manchester City’s recent decision to bring Pierce Charles back from Sheffield Wednesday has further fuelled speculation that Trafford’s exit is now only a matter of time.
Meanwhile, Newcastle could also see movement in the opposite direction, with Nick Pope attracting serious interest from Ipswich Town. A formal offer is expected, which would clear the path for Trafford to arrive as Eddie Howe’s new first-choice goalkeeper.
If Newcastle can agree personal terms and meet Manchester City’s asking price, Trafford could soon complete a stunning move to St James’ Park, leaving Tottenham empty-handed in one of the biggest transfer twists of the summer.
