Club Releases Official Statement After Announcing Another Done Deal Transfer At NUFC

Tottenham have continued their summer spending by completing the signing of Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United in a club-record deal.

An agreement between the two Premier League clubs was reached last week, with Tottenham paying an initial £92.5 million plus £7.5 million in performance-related add-ons, taking the total package to £100 million.

Speaking after the move was confirmed, Tonali said:

> “I’m very happy to be here. When I arrived at the club today, it felt fantastic. People said there were four or five clubs interested, but for me there was only one.

> “I spoke to the head coach, Roberto De Zerbi, for close to two hours about the club, the fans, the stadium and our football. It was like magic because I knew immediately that I had to sign for Tottenham.

> “I’ve played against Tottenham a few times and always found a great atmosphere created by great fans. I can’t wait to start the season.”

Tonali’s arrival follows Tottenham’s £85 million signing of Mateus Fernandes and the £52 million acquisition of Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton earlier this summer, taking the club’s spending to approximately £237 million.

Martin Dubravka, Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi have also joined on free transfers, but Tonali was regarded as Roberto De Zerbi’s top transfer target and is expected to play a key role in Tottenham’s rebuilt midfield.

De Zerbi said:

> “Sandro is a special player and a great signing for our club.

> “I have followed him for a long time, as he came through the youth system at my hometown club, Brescia, and I’m so happy to be working with him now.

> “Given his qualities, there was a lot of interest in Sandro this summer. However, he was very clear in his desire to join Tottenham, and I know our fans will love what he brings to the team.”

Tonali began his professional career at Brescia before joining AC Milan in 2020. Three years later, Newcastle signed the Italian midfielder for a significant transfer fee.

A few months after arriving at St James’ Park, Tonali received a 10-month worldwide suspension for breaching betting regulations during his time in Italy.

Following his return, he helped Newcastle win the Carabao Cup at Wembley, ending the club’s long wait for major silverware.

In a farewell message posted on Instagram, Tonali thanked Newcastle supporters for their support throughout his time at the club.

> “Three years ago I came to Newcastle not really knowing what to expect. Today it’s time to say goodbye and it’s hard to find the right words.

> “Above all, I want to speak directly to the fans. When things were hard for me, you were there. Not for one day did I feel alone. I felt it every time I was at St James’ Park. That’s something I will carry with me for the rest of my life.”

After consecutive 17th-place Premier League finishes, Tottenham have significantly increased their spending under the Lewis family’s ownership.

The club, traditionally known for operating under a strict financial model, have now broken their transfer record twice in the same transfer window.

Despite the arrival of Tonali, Tottenham are still expected to strengthen further, with attacking reinforcements remaining a priority. Bournemouth forward Junior Kroupi is reportedly among the players being considered by the club.
