Abdulhafiz TeslimNewcastle United are continuing to expand their scouting network in South America as the club looks to identify the next generation of talent.
The move follows the signing of highly-rated Ecuadorian winger Johan Martinez from Independiente del Valle. The teenager is set to officially join Newcastle United when he turns 18 next year, highlighting the club’s growing focus on emerging talent from the continent.
Last December, Newcastle strengthened their recruitment operations in South America with the appointment of Thomas Federspiel as the club’s Global Talent Scout covering Brazil, Colombia and Ecuador.
Following the success of that recruitment drive, Newcastle are now looking to expand their scouting presence further by targeting Argentina and Uruguay. The club is currently advertising for a First Team and Global Talent Scout to oversee player identification and assessment across both countries.
According to the job description, the successful candidate will “act as an ambassador for the Club within the assigned territory, leading on the identification and assessment of high-potential players. Working closely with Recruitment leadership, the role supports evidence-based decision-making aligned to the Club’s long-term strategy.”
The appointment underlines Newcastle’s commitment to building a sustainable pipeline of young talent while competing at the highest level.
Newcastle already boast strong South American connections within the first-team squad. Club captain Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton have both become fan favourites after arriving from Brazil, while former Magpies stars Jonas Gutierrez and Fabricio Coloccini proudly represented Argentina during their time at St James’ Park.
The club’s relationship with South American football stretches back even further. Chile-born George Robledo made history in 1952 when he became the first overseas-born player to finish as the English top-flight’s leading goalscorer. Robledo later went on to make 31 appearances for the Chile national team, cementing his place in both Newcastle and South American football history.
As Newcastle continue to expand their global recruitment network, the club will hope to uncover more gems like Johan Martinez and strengthen their long-term future with some of South America’s brightest young talents.
