adminNewcastle United have made a significant move as the club considers plans to build a larger stadium, by purchasing a major portion of the Grade 1 listed Leazes Terrace next to St James’ Park, including all sections facing the ground.
A final decision has not yet been made on whether the club will build a new stadium or expand the current one. However, Newcastle say the purchase gives them “greater flexibility” in planning for the future.
In a statement, the club said:
“This strategic purchase is part of the club’s long-term planning as it continues to assess all credible and feasible options for the future of its home stadium.”
The club has also confirmed its commitment to preserving Leazes Terrace due to its historic and architectural importance. The building is protected and cannot be demolished.
There are currently no plans to change how the building is used. It is still being used as student accommodation, and Newcastle will keep the existing property management operator in place.
Even so, the move is seen as an important development that could give Newcastle more control over future stadium decisions.
By owning most of Leazes Terrace, it could make a possible expansion of the East Stand more realistic in the future. One of the major issues in expanding that side of the stadium has been “right to light” objections from nearby tenants. With greater ownership control, that barrier could become less of an issue.
On the other hand, if Newcastle decide to relocate instead of expanding St James’ Park, the ownership of the site would also give them more control over how the original stadium area is used and developed.
