Abdulhafiz TeslimNewcastle United are preparing to revisit one of their longest-running transfer pursuits this summer as uncertainty continues to surround the future of a key first-team player.
The Magpies have tracked the highly-rated goalkeeper for several years and came close to securing his signature on more than one occasion. In fact, Newcastle agreed personal terms with the player twice, only to see a Premier League giant step in at the last moment and hijack the move.
After returning to his parent club in a £26 million deal ahead of the 2025/26 campaign, the shot-stopper was expected to establish himself as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper. However, those plans quickly changed following the arrival of another world-class goalkeeper, leaving him with limited opportunities throughout the season.
The England international managed just 17 appearances during the campaign and publicly admitted his frustration at finding himself lower down the pecking order than expected.
“It wasn’t what I expected,” he said earlier this year. “I know every time I play, I’ve got to give it my best shot and keep improving. That’s the current situation I’m in.”
According to reports from The Athletic, Newcastle have already made contact regarding the goalkeeper’s availability this summer, although formal negotiations have yet to begin.
Any deal could take time, however, with the player keen to focus on England’s World Cup campaign before making a final decision on his future. Should the Three Lions progress deep into the tournament, talks may not accelerate until mid-July.
Despite the delay, Newcastle remain optimistic. The player has previously shown a willingness to join Eddie Howe’s side, having agreed terms with the club on two separate occasions.
The Magpies have already strengthened their goalkeeping department with the arrival of young French goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen from Stade de Reims, while the club is also exploring options for an additional backup goalkeeper.
Meanwhile, Newcastle are open to offers for Nick Pope after holding discussions with Ipswich Town over a potential transfer. If Pope departs, Newcastle will be expected to move aggressively in the market for a new No. 1.
Away from the goalkeeping situation, Newcastle are also pushing to secure a deal for Osasuna winger Victor Munoz as they continue their summer rebuild.
And the goalkeeper at the centre of Newcastle’s renewed interest is none other than James Trafford, with the Magpies set to make a third attempt to bring him to St James’ Park.
