Tottenham Hotspur, Sunderland AFC and Newcastle United are all in the mix for a talented Brazilian defender who is expected to leave South America this summer.
Tottenham have been one of the quickest Premier League sides to act in the transfer window, securing free-agent deals for Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi. The club have also tied experienced defender Ben Davies to a new deal, extending his stay in North London to a 13th season.
Newcastle United have also moved early in the market, already securing their first signing of the summer in goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen. The France U21 international said:
> “I’m really excited to become a Newcastle United player.”
He made 34 Ligue 2 appearances for Reims last season, while Newcastle are also closing in on a deal for Spanish forward Victor Munoz.
Sunderland AFC, meanwhile, are preparing for a season in European football, with manager Régis Le Bris expected to receive strong backing in the transfer market. The Black Cats have also joined the race for Celtic midfielder Arne Engels, who is valued at around £25m.
Tottenham, Sunderland and Newcastle race for Viery
According to reports in Brazil via Sport Witness, all three Premier League clubs are involved in a major battle for Gremio centre-back Viery.
Newcastle United have already had a bid rejected for the 21-year-old, believed to be around €12m (£10m).
Now both Tottenham Hotspur and Sunderland AFC have entered the race and could hijack Newcastle’s move, while there is also interest from Brighton & Hove Albion, Nottingham Forest, AS Roma, Juventus FC and ACF Fiorentina.
His profile has been described as highly attractive to European clubs. Viery is left-footed, mobile, aggressive defensively and comfortable in possession—traits that are increasingly rare in young centre-backs.
Gremio reportedly value him at around €20m (£17m), and with widespread interest, discussions have now shifted from whether he will leave to how much he will cost.
Viery, who can also play at left-back, is under contract until 2029 with the Brazilian side but is open to a move this summer. He has made 27 appearances this season, scoring twice and providing one assist.
