The Italian international has emerged as one of the Red Devils’ top targets as they look to strengthen their squad ahead of the new season.
While Newcastle are under no pressure to sell one of their key players, fresh reports suggest that Manchester United are willing to make a significant financial commitment if it means securing Tonali’s signature.
The situation has sparked growing speculation about the midfielder’s future at St James’ Park.
According to reports, Manchester United are prepared to meet Newcastle United’s £100 million valuation of Tonali. The 26-year-old has attracted strong interest after establishing himself as one of the Premier League’s standout midfielders since arriving from AC Milan.
United are believed to be targeting multiple midfield additions this summer. While Elliot Anderson remains highly regarded by the club’s hierarchy, competition for his signature has intensified, forcing United to explore alternative options.
Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio recently claimed that Tonali is a preferred midfield target, with the Newcastle star viewed as an ideal addition to strengthen Manchester United’s engine room.
Newcastle have reportedly set an asking price of around £100 million for the Italy international. Previous reports suggested Manchester United were considering an offer in the region of £70-80 million, but fresh claims indicate they could now be willing to match Newcastle’s full valuation.
Further speculation has come from journalist Luke Edwards, who reported that some figures within Newcastle are already preparing for the possibility of Tonali’s departure should a suitable offer arrive.
Edwards stated:
> “Tonali could also leave before the start of the season – although the asking price of about £100m will inevitably cause problems for interested parties – and some within the club expect rather than fear his departure.
> “The Italy international’s agent has been offering him to clubs in England and Europe, hoping to persuade someone to bid for the 26-year-old.
> “The important thing for Newcastle is their succession planning. They already know who they want to sign should Tonali leave. That does not mean he will definitely be sold, but they are prepared for that scenario.”
Despite the ongoing speculation, Tonali remains a Newcastle United player, and no agreement has been reached with Manchester United.
However, if the Red Devils decide to meet Newcastle’s £100 million asking price, the Magpies could face a major decision regarding one of their most influential players ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.
