adminLeicester City’s relegation crisis deepened in brutal fashion after a 1–0 defeat to Swansea City at the King Power Stadium on Saturday, 11 April 2026, with manager Gary Rowett reportedly singled out one player for the costly mistake that led directly to the only goal of the game.
Zan Vipotnik’s 53rd-minute strike proved decisive, taking his season tally to 21 league goals and leaving Leicester second from bottom, four points from safety with just four games remaining.
The defeat stretched their winless run to five matches and pushed them closer to an alarming drop into League One.
The decisive moment came from a Leicester error that completely shifted the momentum of the match. The Foxes were awarded a free-kick in a promising area on the left side of Swansea’s half, but what should have been a routine attacking opportunity turned into disaster.
Oliver Skipp attempted a quick, short free-kick instead of slowing play down. His pass was poorly executed and easily read by Swansea midfielder Eom Ji-Sung, who intercepted the ball inside his own penalty area.
From there, Swansea executed a devastating counter-attack. Eom surged the full length of the pitch, bypassing Leicester’s midfield and defensive line before squaring the ball to Vipotnik, who finished clinically from close range with a composed strike under the crossbar.
Speaking after the game, Gary Rowett did not hide his frustration and openly criticised the decision-making that led to the goal:
“It’s a ridiculous decision to play a quick free kick, for me it has to be more basic.”
The Leicester boss made it clear that the risky restart was avoidable and cost his side dearly in a match they could not afford to lose.
Before the breakthrough, Leicester had created enough chances to take control of the game but failed to convert.
Harry Winks had earlier found Patson Daka in the box, with the striker’s flick setting up Ricardo Pereira, whose powerful strike crashed against the post from a tight angle.
Swansea goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux also played his part, producing key saves to deny Leicester. He tipped a looping header from Daka over the bar after a set-piece delivery from Divine Mukasa, and later pushed away a fierce volley from the striker after a lofted ball into the channel.
Leicester’s frustration continued as Abdul Fatawu came close just before half-time, curling a shot narrowly wide after a defensive lapse. Skipp himself almost redeemed his earlier involvement when his effort from a set-piece was cleared off the line before the break.
Swansea, however, grew stronger in the second half and nearly doubled their advantage when Melker Widell found himself unmarked inside the area, only to fire over from 15 yards.
But the decisive damage had already been done. Vipotnik’s goal, born from Leicester’s mistake, silenced the stadium and sparked visible anger among the home support.
Boos echoed around the King Power Stadium as fans reacted to another damaging result in a season rapidly slipping away. Chants against the club’s leadership followed as frustration boiled over in the stands.
Leicester failed to mount a meaningful response in the closing stages, and the defeat leaves them in deep trouble at the bottom end of the table.
Swansea, meanwhile, ended their four-match winless run with a vital away victory. The result lifts them closer to the top half of the Championship, separated only by goal difference.
Leicester now face a critical final stretch of the season as pressure mounts on Rowett’s squad to avoid a devastating drop into League One.
