Newcastle United could be heading towards a major squad shake-up after another unacceptable performance left supporters furious and raised serious questions about the future of several players.
The Magpies suffered a damaging 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa at St James’ Park, with Johan Manzambi scoring the only goal of the game. Newcastle struggled badly in the final third and managed just one shot on target throughout the match.
For a club with ambitions of competing at the highest level, that simply cannot continue.
The defeat was Newcastle’s third loss in their last four league matches, and frustration around the squad is growing. Jaissle has already faced criticism for his tactics and selection decisions, while supporters are now beginning to question whether some players are capable of delivering what the new manager requires.
The biggest concern is Newcastle’s lack of attacking threat.
Despite having possession and opportunities to put Villa under pressure, the Magpies repeatedly failed to make their dominance count. Their attacking players struggled to create clear chances, while the team looked short of ideas when attempting to break down Villa’s defence.
That has inevitably placed some forwards under the spotlight.
One player who could face serious questions is Yoane Wissa. The striker endured another frustrating outing, with his seven attempts failing to produce a shot on target. His continued struggle in front of goal is becoming increasingly difficult for supporters to overlook.
But he may not be the only one.
Nico González is another name whose future could become a talking point if Newcastle decide that changes are required. The midfielder has shown flashes of quality since arriving, but consistency and his ability to influence matches will remain under scrutiny as Jaissle evaluates his squad.
Then there is William Osula, who has also struggled to establish himself as a reliable attacking option. With Newcastle looking to build a stronger squad for the future, his position could become uncertain if the club decides to bring in another forward.
Importantly, these should be viewed as potential departures rather than confirmed transfers. Newcastle have not officially announced that these three players are being sold.
However, the latest performance has made one thing clear: changes may be necessary.
Newcastle cannot afford to continue accepting performances that leave the team with almost no attacking threat, particularly at St James’ Park. The pressure is now on Jaissle and the club’s hierarchy to identify the players who can take the team forward.
And the names now attracting the most attention are Yoane Wissa, Nico González and William Osula.
If Newcastle decide to act, Toon Army could be in for some very surprising departures.
The squad rebuild under Jaissle may only just be beginning.
