Newcastle United may not be finished in their pursuit of one of Lille’s most exciting attacking talents, despite reports suggesting the Magpies had stepped away from the deal.
The situation surrounding Matias Fernandez-Pardo has taken another interesting turn, with fresh encouragement emerging that the 21-year-old would be open to making the move to St James’ Park if Newcastle can reach an agreement with Lille.
The Magpies have been following Fernandez-Pardo for some time and their interest has become increasingly serious during the final stages of the transfer window. Newcastle have already made an approach for the Belgian forward, with reports in France claiming an offer was submitted.
However, Lille’s valuation has been the major obstacle.
The French club are believed to want a fee around the £60m mark before seriously considering allowing their young attacker to leave. That figure has caused Newcastle to think carefully about whether the deal makes financial sense, particularly with the club having to remain disciplined under the Premier League’s spending rules.
And that is where things currently stand.
Newcastle have not completely closed the door.
The player’s position could change everything
One of the biggest developments is the growing belief that Fernandez-Pardo himself is receptive to the possibility of joining Newcastle.
That does not mean a transfer is guaranteed, nor does it mean Lille have agreed to sell. But it gives Newcastle something important to work with as they attempt to find a solution before the deadline.
Fernandez-Pardo has reportedly been keen on taking the next step in his career, with Premier League football understood to be attractive to him. Newcastle’s interest therefore presents an opportunity that could appeal to the player if the clubs can bridge the financial gap.
The youngster’s versatility is another reason Newcastle remain interested.
He can operate from the left, play through the middle and contribute as a forward, giving Matthias Jaissle another flexible attacking option. Reports have previously highlighted his ability to play in several positions across the frontline.
That versatility makes him particularly attractive to Newcastle as they look to add more quality and competition to their attack.
Newcastle have a decision to make
The biggest question now is whether Newcastle are prepared to stretch their spending far enough to satisfy Lille.
Recent reports have put different figures on Newcastle’s approaches, with one report stating that an offer worth €40m plus potential additions was made, while another reported a package worth €45m including bonuses.
Lille, however, have continued to maintain a much higher valuation.
That leaves sporting director Ross Wilson with a difficult decision.
Newcastle want the player, the player is believed to be open to the move, but the club does not want to create financial problems for itself by agreeing to a deal that could have consequences further down the line.
That financial discipline could ultimately determine whether the Magpies make another push.
Deadline day could become decisive
With the transfer deadline approaching, Newcastle’s interest in Fernandez-Pardo is certainly one to watch.
Reports that the club had walked away may have suggested the story was over, but the latest encouragement surrounding the player’s stance means the situation remains alive.
The Magpies could still return with an improved proposal if they believe Lille are willing to negotiate.
But there is also a very clear limit to how far Newcastle are prepared to go.
For now, the door remains open.
And if Newcastle can find a figure that satisfies Lille without compromising their financial plans, Fernandez-Pardo could yet become another major addition to Jaissle’s attack before the window closes.
The next few days could therefore be crucial.
Newcastle have not given up hope — and with the player reportedly open to the move, this transfer saga may have another twist left.
