Since Matthias Jaissle took charge of Newcastle United, one noticeable feature of the club’s recruitment strategy has been the interest in players the German manager already knows from his previous coaching roles.
That pattern appears to be continuing, with Newcastle reportedly making an enquiry about RB Leipzig midfielder Nicolas Seiwald.
According to Sky Sports journalist Philipp Hinze, Newcastle have expressed an interest in the Austrian international as they assess potential options for their midfield. Jaissle is understood to be a fan of Seiwald, having worked closely with him during their time together at Salzburg.

The midfielder made 91 appearances under Jaissle, giving the Newcastle manager an extensive understanding of his qualities, character and tactical ability. That previous relationship could prove useful if Newcastle decide to take their interest further.
However, the situation is not currently close to completion. Seiwald remains an important member of RB Leipzig’s squad, and Newcastle’s enquiry has not yet developed into a formal transfer agreement.
The 25-year-old has also built an impressive record independently of his relationship with Jaissle. Since joining RB Leipzig in 2023, Seiwald has made 105 appearances for the German club, while he has also established himself as a regular for Austria at international level, earning 51 caps.
His experience could make him an attractive option for Newcastle as they look to strengthen their midfield. The Magpies are expected to need reinforcements in the position following the departures of Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali, leaving the club with an important area to address during the transfer window.
Seiwald’s ability to operate in midfield, combined with his experience in German football and at international level, could make him a useful addition to Jaissle’s squad.
There is also an obvious familiarity between the player and manager. Jaissle previously worked with Seiwald extensively, while he also knows Amar Dedic from their time together at Salzburg. Dedic has recently been linked with a move to Newcastle, further highlighting the influence Jaissle’s previous relationships could have on the club’s recruitment.
Nevertheless, Newcastle will have to convince RB Leipzig to consider allowing Seiwald to leave. The midfielder remains firmly part of their plans, meaning an enquiry is currently all that has happened.
For now, Newcastle’s interest should therefore be viewed as exploratory rather than evidence of an imminent transfer. The Magpies have made contact, Seiwald is on their radar and Jaissle reportedly rates him highly, but there is still a significant distance between an initial enquiry and a completed deal.
With Newcastle needing to rebuild their midfield, however, the situation is certainly one worth monitoring. If the club decide to step up their pursuit, Jaissle’s previous working relationship with Seiwald could become an important factor in convincing the midfielder to make the move to St James’ Park.
For now, the Austrian remains a RB Leipzig player, but Newcastle’s enquiry has placed his name firmly among the midfielders being considered by the Magpies.
