Newcastle United supporters are growing increasingly frustrated after Monday night’s humiliating defeat to Coventry City, with one particular player now facing a huge backlash from the Toon Army.
The Magpies were completely outplayed at the CBS Arena as Coventry ran riot, scoring four goals in a performance that left Newcastle supporters questioning almost everything about the team.
Sven Botman’s goal provided little comfort after Jack Rudoni, Sidiki Cherif, Ellis Simms and Stephen Mfuni all found the net for the hosts.
But while the entire team has come under scrutiny, the criticism from supporters has become particularly fierce towards one player who was handed another opportunity to prove his worth.
Fans had already expressed concerns when Matthias Jaissle’s starting lineup was announced, and those concerns only intensified once the match got underway.
The player struggled to make the desired impact, and despite Newcastle desperately needing a response, Jaissle eventually decided to remove him after 59 minutes.
That decision, however, has done little to calm the anger.
According to the report, the Newcastle winger created three chances but recorded an expected assist figure of only 0.15, completed just 33% of his dribbles and accurately delivered only 25% of his crosses. He also won just 33% of his ground duels and missed a major opportunity from extremely close range.
And this is where the frustration among supporters has really exploded.
Some Newcastle fans now believe Jaissle has been giving the player far more chances than his performances deserve. The feeling is that the manager may have been convinced there is still something to unlock, while supporters believe they have already seen enough.
There is also another reason the anger has become so strong.
Newcastle reportedly rejected two offers from Nottingham Forest during the summer, including a £15 million bid. That decision has now returned to the spotlight after the latest disappointing performance.
The player at the centre of all this is Jacob Murphy.
For a section of the Toon Army, his latest performance has only strengthened the argument that Newcastle should have accepted the offers and moved on.
🗣️ “He should have been sold in the summer.”
🗣️ “How is he still getting these chances?”
🗣️ “Jaissle needs to see what everyone else is seeing.”
The pressure will now be on Jaissle to respond when Newcastle face Aston Villa on Saturday, October 17.
After a 4–1 humiliation, the manager has little room for another questionable selection, and supporters will be watching closely to see whether Murphy is trusted again or finally drops out of the starting XI.
For many Newcastle fans, this is no longer simply about one bad performance.
They believe the Coventry defeat has exposed a problem that has been building for some time — and they want Jaissle to make the difficult decision before it becomes an even bigger issue.
