Newcastle United are refusing to walk away from one of their biggest remaining targets of the summer, with the club making another push to get a deal over the line before the transfer window slams shut.
The Magpies have already been busy rebuilding their squad under Matthias Jaissle, but there is still a feeling inside the club that one more attacking addition could make a huge difference.
And this latest pursuit has suddenly taken another turn.
Newcastle have reportedly put around €60 million on the table for a highly-rated Lille attacker, but the offer has not been enough to convince the French club to sell. Lille are understood to be demanding closer to €70 million, leaving the two clubs with a significant gap to bridge.
The player at the centre of the situation is Matias Fernandez-Pardo.
The 21-year-old has emerged as one of Newcastle’s leading attacking targets, with his ability to operate across the forward line making him particularly attractive to Jaissle’s recruitment team.
There is also an important development on the player’s side.
Fernandez-Pardo is reportedly open to the possibility of moving to St James’ Park, giving Newcastle encouragement that an agreement could be reached if the clubs can finally settle the financial side of the deal.
Lille, however, have so far shown little interest in lowering their demands.
That is where things become particularly interesting.
With the transfer deadline approaching rapidly, Newcastle now have to decide whether to increase their offer and attempt to force the deal through, or walk away and concentrate on another option.
The Magpies have already started exploring alternatives, with Stuttgart’s Bilal El Khannouss reportedly emerging as another possibility should the Fernandez-Pardo negotiations fail.
But Fernandez-Pardo still appears to be the preferred option.
For Newcastle supporters, the timing could hardly be more dramatic. The club have already strengthened in several areas this summer, and adding another young attacker would give Jaissle even more flexibility going into the new campaign.
The question now is simple: will Newcastle blink first?
Lille want their €70m valuation respected. Newcastle have reportedly gone as high as €60m.
There is still a gap — but with the deadline getting closer, this is certainly not a transfer that can be ruled out yet.
One final offer, one change of position from Lille, and the entire situation could suddenly move very quickly.
For now, Newcastle remain in the fight.
And with the clock ticking, the next few days could decide whether Fernandez-Pardo becomes the latest major arrival at St James’ Park — or whether the Magpies are forced to turn elsewhere.
