Newcastle United’s pursuit of Ousmane Diabaté has taken a major step forward, with the young midfielder reportedly travelling to England to undergo a medical with the Premier League club.
The 18-year-old has emerged as a serious target for the Magpies, with developments moving extremely quickly after Newcastle’s interest was first reported.
According to Turkish journalist Reşat Can Özbudak, Diabaté has now arrived in England ahead of his medical. Özbudak was among the journalists who initially reported Newcastle’s interest in the player, alongside Turkish outlet Fotospor.
The latest development suggests that Newcastle have moved swiftly to get the deal over the line, particularly with several other clubs reportedly monitoring the highly rated youngster.
Diabaté Travels to England
Earlier reports indicated that Newcastle had opened discussions with Gençlerbirliği regarding the Guinea international.
At that stage, there was no clear indication that a deal was close to completion. However, Diabaté’s reported journey to England for a medical represents a significant change in the situation.
If the medical is completed successfully and the remaining formalities are finalised, Newcastle could soon confirm the teenager as their latest addition.
Tottenham Hotspur and Brentford had also reportedly shown interest in Diabaté. Fenerbahçe were another club linked with the midfielder, while Tottenham’s interest was believed to have been ongoing for several months.
Diabaté’s representatives reportedly held discussions with Spurs in May, highlighting the level of competition Newcastle faced for his signature.
However, Newcastle appear to have acted quickly and potentially moved ahead of their rivals.
Who Is Ousmane Diabaté?
Diabaté only joined Gençlerbirliği earlier this year after moving from Guinean club Académie SOAR.
Despite his young age, he has already gained experience at senior level. He has made seven appearances for Gençlerbirliği’s first team, while also featuring ten times for the club’s U19 side.
His progress also earned him a senior debut for Guinea in June, further underlining his growing reputation.
Gençlerbirliği reportedly signed Diabaté without paying a transfer fee, although Académie SOAR retained a 40 per cent sell-on clause as part of the agreement.
That clause could prove important if Newcastle complete a permanent transfer, as Gençlerbirliği would have a strong incentive to secure a substantial fee for the teenager.
Newcastle Move Quickly
No official transfer fee has yet been disclosed for the reported move.
Diabaté is understood to have three years remaining on his Gençlerbirliği contract, meaning the Turkish club is not under immediate pressure to sell.
Nevertheless, Newcastle’s rapid progress suggests that the Magpies are determined to secure the midfielder before rival clubs can make a late move.
For Newcastle, the potential signing would represent another investment in young talent with significant development potential.
The club have increasingly looked to strengthen their squad with younger players who can develop over time, and Diabaté appears to fit that strategy.
For now, the next major step will be the completion of his medical and the finalisation of the transfer.
If everything goes according to plan, Newcastle United could soon welcome Ousmane Diabaté to the club, in what would be a rapid conclusion to a transfer story that only emerged publicly a matter of hours ago.
