Newcastle United have now officially entered the 2026/27 season, with July marking the start of a new campaign for the club.
That means there are now eight players who have officially entered the final year of their contracts, with their deals set to expire on June 30, 2027.
Some big decisions are looming for Newcastle’s decision-makers and, of course, much will depend on how successful a season those players have should they remain on Tyneside.
Two names that immediately stand out are centre-halves Dan Burn and Fabian Schär. The pair are both 34 years old and entering the twilight years of their careers, and their performance levels will be monitored this season against the high standards they have previously set at St James’ Park.
Burn will return after representing England at the World Cup, and Newcastle have an option to extend his deal by a further year. Schär has just penned a fresh one-year contract, with both players set to compete with the younger Malick Thiaw and Sven Botman for a place in the starting XI this season.
Two players whose futures are up in the air are Nick Pope and Joe Willock. Pope has been a fantastic goalkeeper for Newcastle since joining from Burnley in 2022, but his form dropped below the levels of the previous three seasons last term.
Mistakes crept into his game, and the Magpies are expected to move in a new direction this summer. Despite signing French goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen, they are also expected to bring in another goalkeeper, which could spell the end of Pope’s time at St James’ Park.
The England international has been linked with moves to Leeds United and his boyhood club Ipswich Town, making his situation one to watch.
Similarly, Willock has been excellent for Newcastle since joining the club in 2021, but game time has not been as regular as he would have liked, and he would command interest from a number of Premier League clubs. It would come as no great surprise if he were to leave Tyneside.
Jacob Murphy is another player who has been an excellent servant and has proven time and again to be an invaluable squad player. He is now 31, though, and while he is expected to remain at Newcastle, his performance levels will be monitored as the club weighs up the merits of extending his deal.
Mark Gillespie has long been regarded as a valuable member of the squad behind the scenes and has made the role of fourth-choice goalkeeper, or ‘training goalkeeper’, his own. He could well see his contract extended again beyond 2027.
Two players whose futures surely lie away from Tyneside, however, are Harrison Ashby and Joe White. Ashby, now 24, has been unable to force his way into the team since his move from West Ham in January 2023, while White, 23, has faced similar struggles.
Neither player impressed during loan spells with Bradford City, and Newcastle will likely look to move them on, whether that is this summer or at the end of their contracts next summer on free transfers.
