Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Lucas Bergvall has reportedly asked to leave the club this summer, with growing speculation over his long-term future in North London.

The 20-year-old is currently away on international duty with Sweden at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and according to The Athletic, he has informed Spurs that he would like a “fresh start” at a new club this summer.

It comes just two-and-a-half years after Bergvall joined Tottenham from Swedish side Djurgården. He impressed during his debut campaign and was widely praised for his development under Ange Postecoglou, including standout performances in Tottenham’s Europa League-winning season.

However, his involvement decreased significantly last season, where he made just 11 Premier League starts as Spurs endured a difficult campaign and finished 17th, narrowly avoiding relegation on the final day.

With competition for midfield places increasing, Bergvall’s future is now uncertain, and several clubs across Europe are monitoring the situation. Aston Villa and Chelsea have both previously been linked, while Newcastle United retain long-standing interest dating back to his time in Sweden, when they reportedly made an unsuccessful bid before his £8.5m move to Spurs.

Sandro Tonali transfer situation adds further uncertainty

Tottenham’s midfield plans could also hinge on incoming transfers, with Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali emerging as a major target this summer.

Reports suggest Tottenham had an offer in the region of £75m–£80m for Tonali rejected by Newcastle, who are expected to demand closer to £100m before considering a sale.

Spurs are understood to remain in discussions as they attempt to strengthen their midfield options, while Manchester City and Arsenal are also monitoring developments closely.

Tonali is believed to be open to a move this summer, although Newcastle remain determined to keep hold of the Italian international.

The situation is further complicated by Spurs’ lack of European football, but the prospect of a new project in London and improved personal terms could still influence the player’s decision.

Bergvall’s future may ultimately depend on how Tottenham reshape their midfield this summer, especially if a major incoming deal such as Tonali’s progresses further.
