Newcastle United have been handed a major setback just days into the new Premier League season, with Matthias Jaissle facing an unexpected defensive problem after confirmation that one of his most important players will be sidelined for several weeks.
The timing could hardly be worse for the new Newcastle boss.
The Magpies had hoped to build momentum after an encouraging 2-2 draw with Liverpool at St James’ Park, but the club has now received worrying news concerning their newly appointed captain.
According to Sky Sports, Dan Burn is set to miss the next few weeks after suffering an ankle injury in training.
Burn was already unavailable for Newcastle’s dramatic opening-day clash with Liverpool, meaning Jaissle was forced to reorganise his defence before the season had properly begun.
The 34-year-old defender’s absence is particularly significant because of the responsibility he has taken on this season. Following a summer of major changes within the squad, Burn was handed the captaincy and was expected to provide experience and leadership during what is effectively a new era under Jaissle.
Now, however, Newcastle must cope without him.
🚨 A BIG PROBLEM FOR JAISSLE
The injury does not appear to be season-threatening, but the expected absence of several weeks creates an immediate selection headache.
A further update indicates that Burn’s ankle problem is not considered too serious and surgery is not expected. However, he could miss Newcastle’s next four or five matches before potentially returning after the upcoming international break.
That could leave Jaissle relying heavily on the alternatives available to him at centre-back and left-back.
Newcastle are already operating with a squad that has undergone considerable change during the summer, and the manager is still attempting to establish his preferred system and defensive partnerships.
The timing therefore makes Burn’s injury even more frustrating.
🔥 NEWCASTLE CANNOT AFFORD MORE SETBACKS
Newcastle showed plenty of attacking promise against Liverpool, twice taking the lead before conceding a controversial late penalty.
But the match also demonstrated how important defensive organisation will be under Jaissle.
The new manager is attempting to introduce his own tactical identity while simultaneously integrating several new players. Losing an experienced defender and captain during that process is far from ideal.
There is also another concern.
Newcastle cannot simply assume that Burn’s absence will be the only fitness problem they encounter. Jaissle has already acknowledged that several players are exhausted and carrying minor injuries after the demanding opening period.
That makes squad depth increasingly important.
👀 COULD THIS CHANGE NEWCASTLE’S TRANSFER PLANS?
With the transfer window still open, Burn’s injury could potentially force Newcastle’s recruitment team to reconsider whether further defensive reinforcement is necessary.
The club has already been extremely active this summer, but the situation could change quickly if Jaissle feels his options are insufficient.
For now, the priority will be getting Burn back fit without rushing his recovery.
Newcastle supporters will hope the latest update proves accurate and that their new captain can return shortly after the international break.
But one thing is already clear: Jaissle’s Newcastle project has suffered its first significant injury headache, and the next few weeks could test the depth of his squad much sooner than expected.
