Newcastle United appear to have determined their course of action following Bruno Guimarães’ transfer to Arsenal, with Victor Froholdt now emerging as the club’s leading target.
The Porto midfielder has been on the Magpies’ radar for several months, but recent reports from both Portugal and Brazil suggest the club is moving closer to turning that interest into a formal offer.

Record states that Froholdt is the primary name on Newcastle United’s final shortlist to replace Bruno. Meanwhile, ESPN Brazil reports that the club has shifted its focus to the Dane after initially considering Botafogo’s Danilo as their preferred candidate.
Newcastle United step up pursuit
The most significant development is not Newcastle United’s interest itself, which has been evident for some time. What has changed is that the club appears to have decided on its next course of action.
According to ESPN Brazil, Froholdt has moved ahead of Danilo in Newcastle’s plans. Record takes a more cautious stance, noting that the 20-year-old currently leads the final shortlist of options being evaluated. Either way, the process is clearly progressing.
There is, however, one crucial detail. Record emphasizes that Newcastle have not yet opened negotiations for Froholdt—or any other player. The Magpies remain in the decision-making phase before making their first official approach.
Porto remain confident
This situation has not changed Porto’s outlook. The Portuguese champions still expect Froholdt to be part of Francesco Farioli’s squad this season, a view shared by club president André Villas-Boas and the player himself.
Champions League football also works in Porto’s favour. Froholdt will be competing in Europe’s premier club competition this season, while Newcastle United are currently without UEFA competition.
Magpies may need to spend almost the entire Bruno fee
The €85 million (£73.4 million) release clause also gives Porto considerable confidence.
Reports indicate that Newcastle plan to reinvest the funds received from Bruno Guimarães’ sale, although they would prefer not to spend the full €85 million on a single replacement.
That could become a major obstacle if the Magpies ultimately decide that Froholdt is their priority target.
With several weeks still remaining in the transfer window, plenty could yet change.
For now, Newcastle appear to have narrowed their search, while Porto wait to see whether this planning phase eventually leads to a formal offer.
