Newcastle United have been left furious after what appeared to be a huge penalty decision went against them during their clash with Liverpool at St James’ Park.

The Magpies were convinced they should have been awarded a spot-kick after Will Osula broke through on goal and appeared to be brought down inside the area by Liverpool defender Jérémy Jacquet.

It was a moment that could have completely changed the game.

Osula was racing towards goal with a golden opportunity developing in front of him when Jacquet appeared to stumble into the Newcastle striker. The contact sent Osula off balance and prevented him from continuing his run in what was potentially a one-on-one situation with Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson.

Newcastle immediately appealed for a penalty.

But referee Stuart Attwell was having none of it.

The official waved play on, leaving Newcastle players and supporters stunned by the decision.

The controversy only intensified as the incident was reviewed, with no penalty eventually awarded.

For Newcastle, it was a decision that felt particularly harsh given the position Osula was in. The striker had managed to get himself into a dangerous area and was threatening to break completely clear of Liverpool’s defence.

Had the decision gone Newcastle’s way, the Magpies would have had an enormous opportunity to extend their advantage and put Liverpool under even greater pressure.

Instead, they were forced to continue playing.

And Newcastle supporters were understandably furious.

The incident came during a remarkable opening period for Matthias Jaissle’s side, who had already shocked Liverpool by taking the lead through Anthony Elanga after just five minutes.

Newcastle were playing with enormous intensity and aggression, pressing Liverpool high and looking dangerous whenever they attacked.

Osula was particularly important to that approach.

His pace and physical strength were causing problems for Liverpool’s backline, and his involvement in the build-up to Elanga’s opener demonstrated just how dangerous Newcastle could be when they transitioned quickly.

That made the penalty appeal even more frustrating for the home supporters.

The feeling inside St James’ Park was that Newcastle had been denied a potentially huge opportunity.

There was certainly contact between Osula and Jacquet, and the Liverpool defender appeared to lose his footing as the Newcastle forward attempted to continue towards goal.

For Newcastle fans, the question was simple: if that isn’t enough for a penalty, then what is?

The decision has already become one of the biggest talking points of the match, with supporters questioning why the incident did not result in a spot-kick.

Liverpool, meanwhile, were relieved to escape without conceding.

The visitors were already under pressure from Newcastle’s aggressive start, and conceding a penalty at that stage could have put them in serious trouble.

Instead, the decision went in their favour.

Newcastle will therefore feel that they were denied a massive chance to punish Liverpool.

Whether the incident will officially be classified as a refereeing mistake will be debated, but from the perspective of the Newcastle supporters, there is little doubt about how they see it.

They believe their team was robbed.

And with the match being played at such a frantic pace, that missed penalty could become one of the defining moments of the contest.

Newcastle had the momentum.

They had the lead.

They had Osula breaking through.

But when the decisive moment arrived, Attwell’s whistle stayed silent.

Now the Magpies must put the controversy behind them and continue their fight against Liverpool — but if Newcastle eventually look back on this match wondering what might have been, this penalty appeal could be right at the centre of the conversation.
