Newcastle United finally gave their supporters something to smile about after a difficult run of results, producing a much-needed 2-0 victory away at Crystal Palace.
The pressure surrounding Matthias Jaissle had been growing after disappointing defeats to Coventry City and Aston Villa, making Sunday’s trip to Selhurst Park an important test for both the manager and his players.
And the response was exactly what Newcastle needed.
The Magpies were forced to be patient during the opening period, but they eventually found the breakthrough shortly after half-time.
William Osula opened the scoring in the 47th minute, giving Newcastle the advantage and immediately changing the atmosphere around the match. Harvey Barnes then added a second goal in the 58th minute to put the visitors firmly in control.
But the result was not without controversy.
Newcastle thought they had doubled their lead earlier when Joe Willock found the net, only for the goal to be ruled out following a VAR review for offside.
That decision provided another talking point for supporters, particularly because of how tight the call appeared to be.
Despite the setback, Newcastle did not collapse.
Instead, Jaissle’s players continued to push forward and eventually got the second goal they had been searching for.
And that is where Alan Shearer’s reaction becomes particularly interesting.
The Newcastle legend has been highly critical of the team’s performances during their recent poor spell, with previous comments highlighting concerns about the attitude and intensity of some players.
This time, however, there was a very different feeling around the team.
Newcastle showed greater discipline, defended their advantage and, crucially, kept a clean sheet.
For a side that had been conceding too many goals and struggling for consistency, that was arguably just as important as the three points.
The victory lifts Newcastle to seventh in the Premier League after eight matches and gives Jaissle valuable breathing room ahead of the next league fixture.
But Shearer will know better than most that one victory does not solve every problem.
The real test now is whether Newcastle can use this result as the starting point for a genuine turnaround.
After all the criticism, the boos and the questions surrounding Jaissle, the Magpies have finally responded on the pitch.
Now everyone will be waiting to see what Shearer says about the performance — and whether he believes Newcastle have genuinely turned a corner.
