The agreement was reportedly finalised overnight, with Newcastle preparing for the midfielder’s medical. The deal is believed to be worth €24 million upfront, with a further €3 million available through performance-related add-ons.
While Steur may not yet be a global superstar, Newcastle believe they have secured a player capable of becoming one in the future. The 18-year-old has already made 25 senior appearances for Ajax, an impressive achievement considering his age and the pressure of playing for one of Europe’s biggest clubs.
The Dutch midfielder has earned comparisons to legendary playmakers, with some describing his style as similar to Luka Modric due to his composure, technical ability and intelligence in possession.
Steur’s greatest strengths are his passing range, ability to control the tempo of games and confidence when receiving the ball under pressure — qualities that perfectly reflect Ajax’s famous football philosophy.
However, he is not just a creative player. For such a young midfielder, Steur has also shown impressive strength in duels and a willingness to contribute defensively, suggesting Newcastle could be signing a player capable of developing into a complete modern midfielder.
