adminLeicester City Chief Football Officer Jon Rudkin believes Russell Martin is “well placed” to help revive the club following two successive relegations.
Martin was appointed as the club’s new manager on Monday night. The former Southampton and Rangers boss has signed a three-year contract at the King Power Stadium, replacing Gary Rowett. His first task will be to return Leicester City to the Championship at the first attempt.
In the official announcement, both Rudkin and new Sporting Director James McCarron released statements explaining the decision.
Rudkin, who rarely speaks publicly, said the appointment followed a detailed process.
“Russell’s appointment follows a thorough process and reflects the qualities that are important for Leicester City,” he said. “He is a strong leader, a clear decision-maker and someone with a defined way of working.
He added: “He understands the responsibility that comes with leading the team and he is well placed to help us move forward with purpose and direction.”
James McCarron also highlighted the structure that will support Martin at the club.
“Russell will be supported by a football structure focused on alignment, accountability and high standards,” McCarron said. “Our role is to make sure the right environment is in place around the team.
“That means creating an environment where players and staff can perform at their best, strengthening the culture across the football operation and ensuring our work in recruitment, development and performance is aligned and consistent.”
Rudkin also took time to thank outgoing staff Gary Rowett and assistant Callum Davidson for their efforts.
“On behalf of everyone at Leicester City, I would like to thank Gary and Callum for their contributions since rejoining us earlier this year,” he said. “They stepped forward at an important and challenging time for us and worked extremely hard with integrity and dedication.”
Notably, club owner Aiyawatt ‘Top’ Srivaddhanaprabha did not release a statement on the appointment, marking the first time since 2016 that he has not commented on a managerial change.
