Wout Faes and Woyo Coulibaly could return to the Leicester City squad in the near future, but will not be involved against Stockport County today, Russell Martin has revealed.
The two defenders looked set to leave City towards the end of the transfer window after appearing to be out of Martin’s plans. Both players have competition in their respective positions and attracted interest over the summer.
Faes had a bid rejected by an unnamed side in mid-August before seeing a move to West Ham United fall through on deadline day. Reports in Italy suggested that Coulibaly’s late loan move to Serie A side Genoa had also collapsed, meaning he stayed at Leicester.
Martin has decided against playing Faes in any of Leicester’s opening seven matches across all competitions, while Coulibaly started in the Carabao Cup defeat to Ipswich Town at the end of August.
Last week, the City boss hinted that Faes could still depart with transfer windows open in other countries. However, the situation now appears to be edging towards a conclusion that will see both players stay at the King Power Stadium.
Asked by LeicestershireLive if anything had changed on Faes’ situation, Martin said: “Wout’s trained and so has Woyo. I think it’s probably a bit early to put them back in the squad because they had four or five days of real uncertainty last week.
“Obviously the transfer window only shut last week. They’re back training properly and they’ve trained really well. I think both can definitely play for us very, very soon.”
Leicester signed Ilari Kangasniemi and Warren O’Hora in the summer, meaning Faes’ possible return would give Martin six centre-back options. Coulibaly has Jayden Joseph and Bade Aluko ahead of him in the right-back pecking order.
