Newcastle United showed plenty of character to rescue a point from a difficult position, but one player in particular caught the attention of manager Matthias Jaissle after the final whistle.
The Magpies found themselves two goals down at St James’ Park after a difficult opening period, with Bournemouth taking advantage of Newcastle’s slow start. Marcus Tavernier opened the scoring before an unfortunate own goal from Malick Thiaw left the home side facing a major uphill battle.
However, Newcastle refused to collapse.
A superb effort from Harvey Barnes gave the hosts hope before the second half produced a completely different performance from Jaissle’s side. The Newcastle boss made changes from the bench, and those substitutions once again had a significant influence on the game.

There was creativity from new signing Matias Fernandez-Pardo, while Sean Steur helped Newcastle gain greater control in midfield. But another substitute eventually produced the moment that completed the comeback.
The player showed exactly the kind of energy and determination Jaissle wants from his squad, constantly demanding the ball, competing in duels and attempting to push Newcastle forward.
His reward came late in the game when he found the equaliser in the 88th minute, sending St James’ Park into celebration and completing a remarkable recovery from 2-0 down.
Jaissle was delighted with the overall contribution from his substitutes, insisting that Newcastle’s success cannot depend solely on the players who start matches.
“Hopefully, we will keep this up, making these substitutions,” Jaissle said. “All of them made a significant contribution, not just JJ for scoring, but also the other players.”
The Newcastle boss then singled out his match-changing substitute for special praise, highlighting his character and willingness to take responsibility.
“Everyone performed well, but particularly JJ demonstrated remarkable character on the field, showing intensity in duels and bravery in possession, actively seeking the ball,” Jaissle added.

That attitude appears to be exactly what the German coach wants to see from his players.
The Newcastle manager also praised the mentality shown by the entire team after going two goals behind. Rather than allowing Bournemouth’s advantage to destroy their confidence, Newcastle continued fighting until the final whistle.
“It’s not common to come back and equalize in the Premier League against such a formidable opponent,” Jaissle explained.
“I believe this is something we can genuinely build upon. The players demonstrated great character, strong personality, and immense commitment, and their desire to win was evident until the final whistle.”
However, Jaissle was also honest about the areas Newcastle must improve.
The manager admitted that his side were not at their best during the first half and struggled to match Bournemouth’s intensity. For him, the next step is ensuring Newcastle can produce the same level of performance across the full 90 minutes.
Still, there was one clear positive from the comeback — the impact of the substitutes.
And the Newcastle player who received the strongest individual praise from Jaissle was Jacob Ramsey, whose late equaliser rescued a point and once again demonstrated the importance of having players capable of changing a game from the bench.
