Pressure is rapidly mounting around Russell Martin at Leicester City after a result that has left supporters questioning where the club goes from here.
The atmosphere around the King Power Stadium has changed dramatically following Leicester’s humiliating defeat to Oxford United, with criticism coming from supporters and respected voices in the media.
What appeared to be another disappointing result has instead triggered serious questions over Martin’s position and the decisions that could follow.
The Foxes suffered a stunning 4-0 home defeat on Saturday, a result that has been described as one of the lowest points in the club’s long history.
There have been heavy defeats before. In 2001, Leicester were beaten 6-0 by Leeds United in a League Cup tie, while Tottenham inflicted a 6-1 defeat on the Foxes in the Premier League in 2017.

However, in League One, the previous heaviest home defeat was a 1-0 loss to Millwall in September 2008.
The scale of Saturday’s humiliation has therefore left Martin facing a storm of criticism.
Pressure begins to build
It did not take long for the reaction to become fierce.
Supporters took to social media to express their frustration, with some calling for Martin to leave the club and others questioning the decision to appoint him in the first place.
Many fans now believe the manager’s position is becoming increasingly difficult to defend.
There were, however, a small number of supporters who urged Leicester to show patience and give Martin more time. One argument put forward was that the club has developed a habit of changing managers too quickly and that another managerial departure may not solve the deeper problems affecting Leicester.
But the criticism did not come exclusively from the stands.
Media criticism intensifies
Professional journalists have also questioned Martin’s approach following the Oxford defeat.
One of the biggest concerns has been the manager’s apparent reluctance to change his approach when Leicester’s possession-based football is not producing results.
Matt Piper, speaking during Radio Leicester’s coverage, pointed to Leicester’s need for a Plan B when their preferred approach is not working.
Former Times chief football writer Henry Winter was even more critical, describing Martin’s possession-heavy tactics as “sustained naivety.”
Another journalist writing for Football365 questioned why Martin continues to receive managerial opportunities despite difficulties at previous clubs.
FourFourTwo, meanwhile, took a wider view of Leicester’s problems, pointing towards the club’s longer-term decline and linking it to financial mismanagement and poor recruitment.
That suggests the pressure on Martin is not simply about one bad afternoon.
Martin’s own words add to the controversy
The manager’s post-match comments have also attracted criticism.
Following the defeat, Martin admitted that his team became too young, too inexperienced and too soft towards the end of the match.
There was some truth in his assessment.
Leicester’s midfield struggled against Oxford’s more experienced players, while the introduction of Kamari Doyle, Tom Watson and Harry Howell in the second half arguably made the side even less experienced.
However, some supporters were unhappy with Martin appearing to place significant responsibility on the younger players.
The bigger question was whether the manager himself had made the right decisions.
The real problem goes deeper
Despite the criticism, there is an argument that blaming everything on Martin would be too simplistic.
Leicester’s decline has been developing over a much longer period and cannot simply be attributed to the current manager.
Saturday’s defeat was certainly influenced by Leicester’s slow and ineffective build-up play, but the possession-based approach alone does not explain a four-goal defeat.
The defending was a major issue.
Leicester made a series of costly defensive mistakes, and those individual errors ultimately played a huge part in the humiliating scoreline.
That leaves the club facing a difficult decision.
The next match could decide everything
The upcoming Stockport game has suddenly taken on enormous importance.
Major changes are expected, particularly in defence and midfield, as Leicester look for a response to the Oxford disaster.
But there is now a much bigger question hanging over the club.
Can Martin survive if Leicester fail to respond?
With the pressure increasing, supporters demanding answers and the manager’s methods facing intense scrutiny, the next decision from the Leicester hierarchy could have major consequences.
And if the expected reaction does not come against Stockport, the pressure surrounding Martin may reach breaking point.
For now, the future of the Leicester boss remains the biggest question hanging over the King Power Stadium.
