Newcastle United have reportedly taken a major step in their pursuit of a highly-rated young midfielder, with the Magpies now making direct contact with his current club as they look to strengthen their options before the transfer window closes.
According to reports from transfer journalist Ekrem Konur, Newcastle have made an official approach to Inter Milan regarding a potential deal for one of European football’s most promising midfielders.
The move is understood to be part of Newcastle’s wider plans to continue building a squad capable of competing at the highest level, with the club seemingly looking beyond the immediate future and targeting players who can develop into key figures at St James’ Park.
Newcastle have not stopped at simply contacting Inter, either.
The Premier League club have also reportedly held discussions with the player’s representatives, outlining their long-term plans and explaining the role they believe he could play within the team.
That contact could prove significant, particularly with the player still only 22 years old and attracting interest from several major clubs across Europe.
The midfielder in question is Petar Sučić, the Croatian international who joined Inter Milan and has quickly established himself as one of the exciting young talents on the club’s radar.
Newcastle’s interest, however, is unlikely to result in a straightforward negotiation.
Inter are understood to value Sučić at approximately €65 million to €70 million, including potential add-ons, a figure that would make the midfielder a significant investment for the Magpies.
The Italian giants are not believed to be under pressure to sell, meaning Newcastle could face a difficult battle if they decide to push forward with a formal proposal.
And there is another complication.
Newcastle are reportedly not alone in monitoring the Croatian. Manchester United, Manchester City and Borussia Dortmund have all been linked with an interest, meaning the Magpies could potentially find themselves competing with three heavyweight clubs for his signature.
That competition could become particularly important as Deadline Day approaches.
Newcastle have already been active in the transfer market and are clearly looking at ways to improve the squad, but signing a player for a fee in the region of €65m-€70m would represent a major statement of intent.
Sučić’s age is also likely to be one of the biggest attractions. Newcastle would not simply be signing a midfielder for the next season; they would be investing in a player who could potentially become an important part of the club’s midfield for many years.
For now, there is still plenty of work to do. Newcastle have made their approach, spoken with the player’s camp and made their intentions clear.
The next question is whether they can convince Inter to negotiate — and, perhaps more importantly, whether they can move quickly enough to stay ahead of Manchester United, Manchester City and Borussia Dortmund.
With the transfer deadline rapidly approaching, this is certainly one Newcastle story that could develop very quickly.
