Newcastle United began the new Premier League campaign with a dramatic 2-2 draw against Liverpool at St James’ Park, having twice taken the lead before a stoppage-time penalty denied Matthias Jaissle’s side all three points.
Anthony Elanga opened the scoring early before Liverpool responded through Cody Gakpo, while Joe Willock restored Newcastle’s advantage. Dominik Szoboszlai eventually rescued a point for Liverpool from the spot deep into added time.
Despite the frustrating result, there were plenty of positives for Newcastle. Jaissle’s side showed plenty of attacking intent and competed strongly against the reigning champions, with several players catching the eye during an impressive opening performance.
However, the draw also highlighted the need for Newcastle to continue strengthening their squad following a major summer rebuild. The Magpies have already lost several important players and have been working to add quality and experience to Jaissle’s squad before the transfer window closes.

Newcastle completed a deal to sign the 24-year-old midfielder from Manchester City, with the transfer reported to be worth up to £50m. Gonzalez was unveiled as a Newcastle player after completing his medical and will wear the No.6 shirt at St James’ Park.
The Spaniard brings experience from Barcelona, Porto and Manchester City and was identified as one of Newcastle’s priority targets for the position.
Newcastle sporting director Ross Wilson confirmed just how important the transfer was to the club, saying: “We’ve worked patiently on this transfer for a number of weeks. This was the one we wanted, and we’re delighted to welcome Nico to Newcastle United.”
Gonzalez also said his goodbyes to his Manchester City teammates before travelling to Tyneside to complete the move, bringing an end to his time at the Etihad.
Now, attention has quickly turned to his first opportunity in Newcastle colours in the Premier League.
With the Magpies preparing to face Tottenham in their first away league match of the campaign, Gonzalez is reportedly in contention to make his Newcastle debut in North London. Newcastle’s own fact file confirmed that the midfielder could be in line to feature against Spurs.
The move would give Gonzalez the chance to make his first Premier League appearance for Newcastle at the new White Hart Lane — potentially marking the beginning of his new chapter in English football after completing his summer transfer.
After telling his Manchester City teammates goodbye and completing his move to Tyneside, the £50m signing could now be handed his first Premier League start for Newcastle against Tottenham.
