Newcastle United have reportedly taken another major step in their plans to rebuild the midfield following the departure of Bruno Guimaraes to Arsenal.
The Magpies knew they would have a difficult task replacing the Brazilian, who had become one of the most important players at St James’ Park. His departure, alongside Sandro Tonali’s move to Tottenham, left Matthias Jaissle with a major gap to fill in the centre of the pitch.
Newcastle have been working behind the scenes to strengthen that area, and reports have now claimed that an agreement has been reached for another midfielder.
The player in question is someone who has already gained experience at the highest level and could bring a different profile to Jaissle’s midfield.
There had been plenty of speculation surrounding Newcastle’s search for a replacement after Guimaraes completed his £75 million move to Arsenal. Newcastle’s sporting director Ross Wilson previously admitted that the club had not planned to sell their captain, but Guimaraes’ desire to leave ultimately played a major part in the decision.
That made finding a suitable replacement one of the club’s biggest priorities.
Newcastle had been linked with several midfielders throughout the summer, with the club looking for a player capable of handling the physical demands of the Premier League while also contributing when the team has possession.
The latest development will therefore come as a major boost to supporters who have been concerned about the quality and experience available in midfield.
However, Newcastle’s recruitment strategy has changed significantly. The club have focused heavily on younger players with potential resale value, while also looking to add players capable of making an immediate impact.
And the identity of the midfielder involved is likely to attract plenty of attention.
Newcastle have already completed the signing of Nico González from Manchester City, with reports putting the deal at around £52 million. The Spaniard has been brought in specifically to strengthen a midfield that lost both Guimaraes and Tonali.
That means any additional midfield agreement would represent another significant move from Jaissle and the Newcastle hierarchy as they attempt to reshape the squad.
For Newcastle supporters, the biggest question is whether the new arrivals can collectively fill the enormous void left by Guimaraes.
The Brazilian was more than just another midfielder. He was the heartbeat of Newcastle’s team, combining aggression, technical quality and leadership in the middle of the pitch.
Replacing that influence was never going to be straightforward.
But with the latest agreement reportedly in place, Newcastle appear determined to make sure the loss of their former captain does not derail their plans for the new season.
The final stages of the transfer are now expected to be watched closely, with Newcastle continuing to work on further additions before the transfer deadline.
