The Magpies had been pushing to sign Lille winger Matias Fernandez-Pardo before the transfer window closes, but their efforts have so far failed to convince the French club to sell.
Newcastle reportedly lodged an offer worth around €40m for the Belgium international, but Lille rejected the proposal and have continued to stand firm over their valuation.
The situation became even more difficult for Newcastle after Manchester City completed a huge €100m move for Lille midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi.

That deal has strengthened Lille’s financial position and removed any pressure to sell Fernandez-Pardo, with club president Olivier Letang now holding firm on a €70m price tag.
According to Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri, Newcastle have continued trying to convince Lille, but the Magpies have yet to make the French club reconsider their position.
For Matthias Jaissle’s side, paying €70m would represent a huge increase from their initial €40m proposal, leaving Newcastle with a major decision to make as the transfer deadline approaches.
RB Leipzig have also shown reluctance to meet Lille’s demands, while Atletico Madrid have already seen a proposal rejected. Aston Villa have previously scouted Fernandez-Pardo, but do not currently appear to be pushing for his signature.
With Newcastle’s pursuit becoming increasingly complicated, the chances of Fernandez-Pardo remaining at Lille until January now appear to be growing.
The Magpies have also explored a move for Rafael Leao, although the AC Milan star has rejected the idea of moving to St James’ Park.
But just when Newcastle supporters appeared to be facing another frustrating transfer setback, a completely unexpected development has now emerged on Tyneside.
🚨🎥 A top-class Manchester City player has reportedly been spotted in Newcastle as a major move to St James’ Park edges closer.
Sky Sports News reports that Nico González is in Newcastle today, having stayed on Tyneside overnight and undergoing part of his medical.
The Spanish midfielder is reportedly putting the finishing touches to a £50m transfer from Manchester City to Newcastle United.
