The Premier League has released an official explanation for the controversial late penalty that denied Newcastle United a famous opening-day victory against Liverpool at St James’ Park.
Newcastle looked set to begin Matthias Jaissle’s reign with a huge three points after twice taking the lead, but Liverpool dramatically rescued a 2-2 draw through Dominik Szoboszlai’s 99th-minute penalty. The decision immediately sparked heated debate among Newcastle supporters, players and football fans, with many questioning whether the contact inside the box was enough to warrant a spot-kick.
The incident occurred deep into stoppage time when Liverpool substitute Victor Muñoz went down inside Newcastle’s penalty area following a challenge from Lewis Hall.

Referee Stuart Attwell immediately pointed to the penalty spot, despite strong protests from the Newcastle players. VAR subsequently reviewed the incident but did not overturn the on-field decision.
According to the Premier League Match Centre’s explanation, the decision was upheld because Hall did not play the ball and made clear contact with Muñoz. The VAR assessment specifically identified contact between Hall’s knee and Muñoz’s thigh and concluded that the original penalty decision should stand.

The Premier League’s explanation has done little to end the controversy, however.
Newcastle manager Matthias Jaissle made his feelings clear after the final whistle, describing the decision as a “really soft” penalty and admitting that he disagreed with the referee’s call.
The German coach argued that if such challenges are consistently punished, Premier League matches could see a significant increase in penalties throughout the season. His comments reflected the frustration inside the Newcastle camp after the hosts had come so close to securing one of the biggest possible statements at the beginning of a new era.
The result was particularly painful because Newcastle had produced an impressive performance against a Liverpool side beginning a new chapter under Andoni Iraola.
Anthony Elanga gave Newcastle the perfect start with an early goal before Cody Gakpo brought Liverpool level in the second half. Joe Willock then restored Newcastle’s advantage almost immediately, putting the home side within touching distance of victory.
However, the late penalty changed everything.
Szoboszlai stepped up under enormous pressure and produced a powerful finish to rescue a point for Liverpool, leaving Newcastle players and supporters devastated. Reuters confirmed that the match ended 2-2 after the Hungarian midfielder converted the stoppage-time spot-kick.
For Newcastle, the controversy will undoubtedly leave a bitter taste, especially after Jaissle’s young side had shown plenty of promise during a period of major transition.
Liverpool, meanwhile, will take encouragement from their refusal to give up until the final whistle. Iraola praised his players’ fighting spirit after they managed to recover from being behind twice.
But the biggest talking point remains the penalty.
The Premier League has now made its position clear: officials believed there was sufficient contact, Hall did not play the ball, and VAR therefore had no reason to overturn the original decision.

Whether Newcastle supporters agree with that explanation is another matter entirely.
With the season only just beginning, the controversial decision has already provided one of the first major talking points of the new Premier League campaign — and Newcastle fans will certainly feel that a potentially famous victory was taken away from them in the final moments.
The debate over whether it was a genuine penalty or an extremely soft decision is unlikely to disappear anytime soon.
