adminNewcastle United’s summer rebuild could be heading towards another significant development as the club continues to strengthen its squad ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.
The Magpies have already made several additions this summer, with the recruitment strategy focused heavily on young players with technical ability and long-term potential. Under Matthias Jaissle, Newcastle are looking to establish a new identity while building a squad capable of competing at the top level.
Despite the number of arrivals already secured, the club’s transfer activity does not appear to be finished.
Newcastle are understood to be working on another midfield addition, with negotiations reportedly progressing behind the scenes. The potential arrival would also add further experience from some of Europe’s biggest footballing environments.
The player in question has an especially notable background, having developed at La Masia, Barcelona’s renowned academy responsible for producing some of the greatest players in football history.
That academy has produced the likes of Lionel Messi, Xavi Hernández, Andrés Iniesta and Sergio Busquets, making any player with a genuine La Masia background an intriguing prospect.
Now, Newcastle could be set to bring another product of that famous system to England.
According to @dutchiefooty, Newcastle United have reached a verbal agreement with Manchester City over the transfer of Nico González.
The proposed deal is reportedly worth £40 million plus £5 million in potential bonuses, with Newcastle now working to finalise personal terms with the midfielder.
There are also claims that González could already have arrived in Newcastle, although the remaining contractual details must be completed before the transfer can move forward.
González joined Manchester City after developing at Barcelona and later spending time at Porto. His technical quality, versatility and familiarity with possession-based football could make him an interesting addition to Jaissle’s midfield.
