adminNewcastle United are reportedly plotting a potential £68 million double deal to further strengthen Eddie Howe’s defence, with renewed interest in a centre-back and another goalkeeper also on the club’s radar.
Having banked £170 million from the sales of Anthony Gordon to Barcelona and Sandro Tonali to Tottenham Hotspur, the Magpies continue to search for new additions to Howe’s squad.
Midfielders Sean Steur and Aladji Bamba have already arrived to help offset Tonali’s departure, while doubts remain over the future of captain Bruno Guimarães, who is still a major target for Arsenal.
The €50 million signing of winger Bazoumana Touré has helped replace Gordon, while goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen was brought in to compete for the No.1 spot after Aaron Ramsdale returned to Southampton following the end of his loan spell.
However, Newcastle are not finished searching for goalkeepers, particularly with former target James Trafford closing in on a move to Leeds United.
According to Sky Sports’ North East reporter Keith Downie, Newcastle are monitoring Lukáš Horníček, although no formal offer has been made.

It’s reported the giant Czech Republic international has a release clause of £30 million and is attracting interest from a number of Premier League clubs, having already turned down Hull City.

Newcastle reignite interest in Atalanta star
Newcastle have also reportedly revived their interest in Atalanta centre-back Giorgio Scalvini, having previously considered signing him during the January transfer window.
The Magpies were linked with Scalvini earlier this year but failed to reach an agreement.
Now, according to Tutto Atalanta, Newcastle are back in the race as Atalanta look to raise funds following the collapse of Ederson’s proposed move to Manchester United.
The report claims the 22-year-old Italy international is the leading candidate to leave the club before the transfer window closes, with Newcastle described as being “at the forefront” of the race for his signature.
Another factor behind a potential sale is the appointment of Maurizio Sarri as Atalanta’s new manager. Sarri reportedly prefers a back four instead of a three-man defence and is also keen on bringing in Lazio defender Alessio Romagnoli.
As a result, Atalanta are prepared to sell Scalvini if they receive an offer of around €45 million (£38 million) for the defender, who has two years remaining on his current contract.
Whether Newcastle are willing to meet that valuation remains uncertain, especially with Malick Thiaw, Sven Botman, Fabian Schär, and Dan Burn already available to Howe.
However, with Schär and Burn both 34 years old and their contracts due to expire in 2027, Newcastle could be planning ahead by pursuing Scalvini.
Meanwhile, Charlotte FC have emerged as the frontrunners to sign former Rangers captain James Tavernier, although TEAMtalk understands Newcastle also retain an interest in the experienced full-back.
