The Magpies have been working behind the scenes to strengthen Eddie Howe’s squad ahead of the new campaign, but reports suggest one of their latest pursuits is becoming increasingly complicated.
The club are believed to have opened discussions with a leading La Liga side to assess the availability of a talented young defender who has rapidly established himself as one of Spain’s most versatile emerging players. Initial contact has reportedly been positive, but Newcastle are yet to make a decisive move as they continue evaluating their options before submitting an official offer.
That hesitation could prove costly.
Serie A side Fiorentina have reportedly accelerated negotiations with the player’s representatives and are said to be pushing aggressively to reach an agreement. Their swift approach has placed them in a strong position, forcing Newcastle’s recruitment team into a race against time if they want to stay in contention.
The Magpies are far from the only admirers. Several Premier League clubs have also been monitoring the player’s progress throughout the past season, with his ability to perform in multiple positions making him one of the more intriguing names available this summer.
Originally developed as a left-back, the Spanish youngster has evolved into a player capable of operating much further up the pitch. During the previous campaign, he frequently featured as a left winger, using his pace, direct dribbling and relentless work rate to trouble opposition defences while still providing defensive discipline whenever required.
His performances produced two goals and three assists across roughly 30 appearances, but statistics alone do not fully reflect his growing influence. Scouts have reportedly been impressed by his athleticism, tactical intelligence and willingness to adapt to different systems—qualities that fit perfectly with the demanding style Eddie Howe expects from his players.
Financially, the transfer may also be more achievable than first thought. Although the player is understood to have a €20 million release clause, his current club are believed to be under pressure to raise funds, meaning they could accept a lower fee if the right proposal arrives before the window closes.
There has also been reported interest from other European clubs, but indications suggest the player would prefer a move to a more competitive project, keeping Newcastle’s hopes alive—provided they move quickly enough.
Some supporters have even wondered whether Newcastle could use their relationship with Sevilla through goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos to help facilitate negotiations, although there is currently no credible indication that such discussions have taken place.
For now, no agreement has been reached and the situation remains unverified, with several clubs still in the race. However, if Newcastle delay much longer, they risk watching another promising target slip through their fingers.
The player at the centre of the growing transfer battle is Sevilla’s versatile 23-year-old Spaniard, JoaquÃn MartÃnez Gauna, better known as “Oso.”
