adminManchester United remain firmly focused on signing Newcastle United defender Lewis Hall this summer, with the England international still viewed as Michael Carrick’s preferred option to strengthen the left side of his defence.
The Red Devils had been planning their recruitment strategy for months and created a shortlist of young left-backs before the transfer window opened, with Hall, Barcelona’s Alejandro Balde and Nathaniel Brown among their main targets.
Brown has since completed a move to Bayern Munich, while United continue to monitor Balde’s situation in Spain. However, Hall remains their priority target, although a deal is expected to be difficult to complete.
Newcastle have already allowed key players Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali to leave this summer, while Bruno Guimarães has also been heavily linked with a potential exit before the transfer window closes.
Because of that, convincing the Magpies to sell another important first-team player will not be straightforward.
Despite the challenge, Manchester United remain confident that Hall is attracted by the possibility of moving to Old Trafford and working under Carrick.
The 21-year-old is believed to see the opportunity to establish himself at Manchester United as a major career step. He is reportedly comfortable joining initially to compete with Luke Shaw before eventually becoming the club’s long-term first-choice left-back.
That pathway is considered one of the biggest factors behind United’s interest in the defender.
United’s pursuit of Hall also reflects their desire to build a younger squad, with the club looking for a left-back who can become a key figure in their defence for years to come.
Patrick Dorgu is now viewed internally as more of an attacking option rather than a traditional defensive full-back, which has increased Carrick’s desire to add a specialist left-back.
While Hall remains the dream target, Manchester United are also considering other defensive options.
Noussair Mazraoui continues to be highly valued by Carrick due to his versatility and ability to play across multiple positions, including both full-back roles, centre-back and midfield.
However, Mazraoui’s future at Old Trafford remains uncertain, with interest arriving from several clubs.
Former Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim is reportedly interested in reuniting with the Morocco international at AC Milan, while Bundesliga clubs and Saudi Pro League teams have also shown interest.
For now, though, United’s main focus remains on Hall. Once their midfield plans are completed, the club are expected to turn their attention towards strengthening the left-back position.
