‘Here we go’ – Newcastle United favourite set for Premier League return weeks after being spotted on Tyneside

former Newcastle United striker is on the verge of making a surprise return to the Premier League just months after suffering the disappointment of relegation to the Championship.

The experienced forward left St James’ Park last summer after five memorable years on Tyneside and signed a one-year contract with West Ham United. Despite finding the net seven times in 35 appearances across all competitions, he was unable to help the Hammers avoid relegation under Nuno Espírito Santo.

Following the end of the campaign, the veteran attacker attracted interest from several clubs. Scottish Premiership champions Celtic were credited with an interest, while newly promoted Hull City were also linked with a move as they searched for proven Premier League experience.

However, it now appears another top-flight club has won the race for his signature.

According to Sky Sports, Brentford are close to completing the signing of the free-agent striker on a one-year deal. The report states that an agreement is close, with the Bees moving quickly to strengthen their attacking options ahead of the new season.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has also given the deal his trademark “Here we go!” confirmation, signalling that the move is effectively complete pending the final formalities.

The striker recently reflected on West Ham’s relegation in an emotional message to supporters, admitting the season had fallen well below expectations.

“It hurts. We have failed as a team and definitely fallen short of everyone’s expectations,” he wrote. “I always trained hard, kept my integrity and gave everything whenever I had the chance to wear the Claret and Blue shirt. Thank you to everyone who supported us. I truly hope the club returns to the Premier League where it belongs.”

The experienced frontman was also spotted back on Tyneside during the summer break, visiting Cute as Cakes in Wallsend on two separate occasions and happily posing for photos with supporters, highlighting the strong bond he still shares with the Newcastle community.

The player at the centre of the move is Callum Wilson. After leaving Newcastle United last summer, the former England international now looks set to continue his Premier League career with Brentford, where his experience, movement and eye for goal could prove to be valuable additions to Keith Andrews’ squad.
