adminBruno Guimarães raised the first concerns over his Newcastle United future more than a year ago, when he admitted the squad needed major improvements despite the club’s Champions League qualification and Carabao Cup success.
Since then, Newcastle have lost several key figures, including Alexander Isak, Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali, while the Magpies endured a disappointing 12th-place Premier League finish. The club’s long-awaited stadium and training ground developments have also remained uncertain.
Following Newcastle’s 1-0 defeat to Everton last season, Guimarães admitted the squad was not yet at the level he expected.
“We have been improving a lot, but I think we are not at the level that I want,” Guimarães said. “For next season, we’re going to need more players, to be honest with you, because this squad is a little bit short.”
The Brazilian midfielder also pointed to Newcastle’s struggles during their previous Champions League campaign, where injuries exposed a lack of squad depth.
“We saw last season when we played Champions League, we lost some players to injury and it was messy for us. So I think we can improve the level of our squad.”
With Guimarães approaching his 29th birthday, reports suggest the midfielder has now informed Newcastle’s hierarchy that he is open to a move to Arsenal.
The two clubs are currently believed to be far apart in their valuations, but Newcastle’s previous experience with player exits has shown how difficult it can be to keep an unhappy star.
The departure of major names has raised questions about the direction of the Saudi-backed project, which originally attracted players like Guimarães, Isak, Tonali and Gordon with promises of challenging at the highest level.
Only recently, Guimarães spoke positively about his time at Newcastle, highlighting his growth both personally and professionally.
“A lot has changed in these four years,” he said. “It feels like 10 years have passed in four. In my personal life I’m a father of two, I’m married, and professionally we have raised Newcastle United’s level.”
“I’ve become one of the club’s biggest idols. I’ve matured a lot. I am very happy and much more experienced.”
However, his latest stance has created fresh uncertainty over his future at St James’ Park, with Arsenal monitoring the situation closely as Newcastle face the possibility of losing another key player.
