According to The Guardian’s Louise Taylor, Newcastle United have agreed a £51.5 million deal, worth around €60 million, with Freiburg for Switzerland midfielder Johan Manzambi.
“Newcastle have agreed a £51.5m deal with Freiburg that should see the Switzerland midfielder Johan Manzambi swap the Bundesliga for the Premier League,” Taylor reported.
Manzambi is expected to sign a long-term contract with Newcastle, although the transfer will not be completed while Switzerland remain in the World Cup.
The 20-year-old has been one of the standout young players of the tournament but is currently dealing with a minor knee injury ahead of Switzerland’s quarter-final clash against Argentina.
Newcastle have already confirmed the £23 million (€27 million) signing of Sean Steur from Ajax. Following the arrivals of Bazoumana Touré and Steur, Manzambi would become the latest high-potential addition in Ross Wilson’s squad rebuild.
Meanwhile, Newcastle’s situation regarding Bruno Guimarães continues to develop. A potential departure for the Brazilian midfielder could make the Manzambi deal easier to justify financially, although the club remain determined to keep their captain.
Taylor reported that Newcastle have no intention of selling Bruno despite interest from Arsenal, but they are aware the situation has become increasingly complicated.
“Newcastle, meanwhile, remain insistent they have no intention of selling Bruno Guimarães to Arsenal but are aware the Brazil midfielder has become unsettled on Tyneside,” Taylor reported.
Taylor added that a new contract could still change the situation. However, an offer in the region of £75 million (€87 million) could potentially force Newcastle into making a decision and deliver another significant profit for the club this summer.
